Growing skin back

Watching a documentary on C4 just now, where they are discussing two ladies who have received acid burns and severe scalding has got me thinking why, with all the advances of science and medicine, we can't replace or repair skin to a much better degree than we currently are able to. After all, it's possible to grow an ear on a Mouse's back, so surely something as simple as repairing skin should be a walk in the park? Failing that, we must be able to encourage skin to grow back better than it does after severe burns?

I'm sure I've seen a program that had something like this on.

They took a skin graft and then treated it to a fair amount of processes, with the result being them able to grow more skin from the original sample.

Maybe I just imagined it?

Thats the way it is currently done but it takes forever. Look at my link a couple posts above.

It's got something to do with the damage caused to the germinal layer of the skin been damaged and replaced by scar tissue. The skin cells no longer grow in nice uniform lines, so to speak, so the resulting finished article isn't smooth as a babys bum.

It'll no doubt be a lot more complicated than that and I may even be a tad off the mark.
