I know I'm clutching at straws here but I've spent ages Googling for help. All the medical sites seem to assume it's down to an injury but I found a forum with lots of people describing similar symptoms - but no advice. And, no, I haven't seen the doctor yet but I might do soon.

Basically, about a month ago the tip of my left big toe became sore during my morning swim. It went away after about an hour. This has repeated with every swim since (about 4 times a week) but this last week I've also noticed the nail is 75% dark red underneath. Not blue/black like you get after dropping something heavy on it.

It's not crippling or long-lasting or spreading, just very annoying for a shortish time every morning.

Any ideas, anyone?

not a doctor at all - but sounds like a nail infection.
