'healthy' and non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy at the pub
Discussion
Interesting thread. Just found out I have a fairly high cholesterol level (at the age of 32!) so along with stopping smoking, i'm also attempting to reduce alcohol consumption to a minimum.
In the pub today I was drinking dandelion & burdock. It is non-alcoholic, but high in sugar.
In answer to you question, tomato juice? Tastes good with a dash of Worcester sauce / few drops of Tabasco.
Not much sugar and has lycopene in it which is very healthy.

I thought alcohol was pretty good for cholesterol. Possibly increases HDL (good) cholesterol? And moderate drinkers have been shown to have a lower risk of heart disease. But, yeah dandelion & burdock is good, I believe dandelion is a diuretic so it may make trips to the mens room a bit more frequent.
Cholesterol is pretty much your liver's reaction to saturated fat. It's not all bad - your brain is basically made of cholesterol (so always full fat milk for babies!) and your heart, brain, and muscles can burn it pretty well as long as you do burn it. Alcohol probably isn't the worst thing for it.
If you just want a softie that doesn't make you want the floor to open up and suck you to Hell, try Lime (juice, not cordial) and Soda.
Otherwise, a St. Clements; or Cranberry, Ginger Beer, and the juice of a lime is very refreshing. Both higher in sugar, which isn't that great in large quantities either.

Alcohol: I think it's specifically red wine that's linked to lower heart disease, but this is based on European drinking habits rather than UK ones thus means one glass of red wine with an evening meal rather than 18 pints of Stella, corresponding vodka/rum/tequila chasers and a drunken snog in the alleyway by the pub bins...But, yeah dandelion & burdock is good, I believe dandelion is a diuretic so it may make trips to the mens room a bit more frequent.
D&B: alcohol is a diuretic so there may be no change in toilet visit frequencies.
I'd like some ideas too. My main problem is drinking even the soft drinks at the same rate I drink beer when I have my drinking head on. How do you sip drinks and make them last an hour?
Fizzy water and OJ are 1. laughably expensive and 2. even more bloating than beer, especially when you get up to four or six pints plus.

Problem is they put in things like aspartame
to make it taste "nice". Downside being it gives me chest pains and a slight feeling of nausea (which may or may not be due to having chest pains). So you'd still have people checking the bottle not for sugar but the other ingredients used to replace it.There are about the same number of calories in a pint of coke as there are in a pint of lager. Both of which are about the same as fruit juice. The only bonus is that if you aren't drinking you're probably less likely to order 6 packets of crisps, some nuts and a bag of pork scratchings at the same time.

There is quite a difference between low calorie and 'healthy'. Sugar substitutes have no calories but have exactly the same effect on your body in practically every other way.
It's like the butter vs. margerine debate. Saturated fats are seen as bad, but trans-fats and polyunsaturated fats are potentially worse. Guess which one is seen as 'healthy'. Yet if you want a stint in Antarctica you'll find yourself eating solid lard just to stay alive.
NB. I don't think any of the 'spreads' for sale are technically margerine anymore; that was beef fat based.

I know a lot of people in the same boat. What on earth do you drink if not alcohol.
Is there anybody on here who is in the drinks business?
Here's one for the Marketeers: A premium non alcoholic beverage that is masculine and has a bit of street cred. Delivered in a beer bottle shape with good quality ingredients. I can't think of one.

Cobra Zero.Becks Blue.
There is a Dutchie one, too. But it doesn't half make me fart. Not so good for business meetings.
If calories are more important that alcohol, there is Low C (now called something else), it is only 1WW point a bottle, bottles of Bud are only 1½ points. Drinking from bottles slow you down.
Do they still make Kaliber?
edit, I see Cobra Zero and Becks Blue are the same as Kaliber.

They are both much, much better than Kaliber. Things have moved on.
