I suspect from using weights, I've developed a ganglion on my wrist. It's been slightly annoying for a couple of months but over the last few days it's become really painful and is restricting movement.

I've read that there's about a 20% chance of it recurring if I have it removed but I wondered what other people have experienced?

Aren't you supposed to smack them with the bible - have even seen that suggested in an orthopaedic book in the past!

I think I'd try whacking it before going the surgical route.

I have a little one where my finger joins my hand. It goes through stages of becoming really painful and then it almost disappears.
I declined surgery because it does settle down on it's own.
Has it flared up like this before? Personally I'd wait and see if the pain settles on it's own.

Like Lois, I had one on the top of my hand. Dr did not diagnose it as it wasn't a bump and I ended up having physio on it lol !! Finally they diagnosed it as a ganglion. It used to get painful and I had a steroid injection in it - by jove that was more painful than the ganglion itself! Didn't work either as it still came back.

Had another appear on the other hand and now I have one on my foot! I would consider the foot one being removed as you can see it sometimes but they just seem to come and go and I just take some anti-inflammatory tabs if needed.

No help to the OP I'm afraid, but I have a small ganglion cyst on the middle finger of my left hand. It's never been painful and my GP said it's nothing to worry about. If it grows any larger or becomes painful I think I'd bash it a time or two before opting for surgery though.

don't hit it with a book. They really do fecking hurt when you give it a thump. As they get more painful they are at the verge of rupture anyhow and likly it will pop and a day later it will feel better. I thought i would be able to "feel" when they popped but because of the pressure they place on the nerves and tendions the pain lingers for a while. Try press ups and wrist extension more regulary.

Or hit it with a book. I did, and wimpered like a pansy girl but touch wood i have not had many reoccurances. Dont go the surgery route unless feeling like sucide. Waste of time in 90% of cases and you do not want to be fking about with things unnessecarley, esp wrists.

I had on ont he back of my hand when I was in my teens. I managed to trap my hand between a wardrobe and an ancient wooden framed TV. I slid the TV across the worktop but it stuck on it's rubber feet. One almighty push later and the damn thing pinned my hand against the side of the wardrobe.

By god , it hurt but never came back. So just smack it hard and it will probably go.

A mate at work recently had one appear on his hand. He went to the doc and they used a syringe to remove the fluid from it. A week later and it's gone without any mark at all.

Take your pick.

our son had one on the back on his hand, then he broke his wrist and when the plaster cast came of it was gone - only thought I would mention this, to be clear I am not recommending it as a guaranteed cure wink

I had one years ago and got a mate to whack it with a book. First couple of times he held back a bit and boy did it hurt! Third attempt he really whacked it hard and it dissapeared instantly and didn't even hurt once it had gone.

Probably been about 7 years since it went and it hasn't come back.

Go to your GP - will probably try syringe and needle before considering surgery.

DON'T smack it with a book, inviting all sorts of nasties.

I had a ganglion for about years on my wrist. I had it syringed twice at the doctor's then a third time at hospital (the GP said they no longer did the procedure.) Third time lucky, twelve years ago. It is a straightforward and pain-free procedure.

i had mine removed under a local, had previously tried hitting it, worked a few times but god it hurt, first doctor put his 2 thumbs on it and pushed until it decreased in size, that hurt to, couldnt move my wrist for a day or two, next a navy doctor tried to drain with a needle, asked if the trainee could have a go, thought why not it cant be hard but when she put the needle in and couldnt suck anything out the surgeons exact words were 'give it a good wiggle'!!!! ouch!!!! really could have been done for assault on a senior officer that day! In the end they just sent me to hospital to have it whipped out, 1 inch scar left behind and a grizzly lump underneath, even got 2 weeks off sick for it as i was left handed so couldnt do the classroom work!

I had one about 30 years ago on the top of my foot, my doctor told me to put a two pence piece over it and tightly bandage it onto my foot, every day tie the bandage a bit tighter. It worked, it disappeared and never came back. smile
