So then, apparently I have an atigmatism in my left eye and glasses/contacts will help. Sounds worse than it is an my prescription is relatively minor +1/-1/12 if that means anything to anyone.
My question is that, as my right eye is fine, can I make do without as I'm concerned that if I start wearing glasses now will I become reliant on them? I assume its not something that will fix itself?
And on a final note, I found this out via a free eye check at Tescos, are they telling the truth or are they just trying to sell me glasses?

I can't say I've ever heard of someone's eyes worsening because they wore glasses.
I have astigmatism worse in my right eye than the left. Since I got glasses, I've never looked back (see what I did there?)
Working, reading, pretty much anything is better/easier with them on. I find it easy to switch between on and off.
Plus you get to nod at other glass wearers, not that they have any idea what the f
k you're doing, but you can get away with it...

k you're doing, but you can get away with it...Both my eyes are astigmatic. I started wearing glasses intermittently about 4 years ago, mainly whilst driving just to sharpen up road signs. Since then they've slowly become worse, I've updated my prescription a few times and wear them permanently now.
My eye sight doesn't seem to be getting much worse now i'm wearing glasses all the time, so i'm not sure wearing them or not massively effects how bad they are, and that they could get worse regardless of whether you wear them or not.

If you have astigmatism, and you want to go down the contact lens route, you'll need toric lenses. They cost a bit more than standard lenses but are well worth a look.
Depends on the degree of astigmatism, I think the nature of soft lenses gives a bit of leeway. I have it a bit in one eye, but wear normal soft lenses.randomman said:

Wear glasses, it will help. I have astigmatism in my right eye, and so the optician told me, it is when you eye is more rugby ball shape, then round, so i guess you lose a little bit of peripheral vision, but this 968 will be able to tell you exactly what it is i'm sure, but get glasses, they are cheaper than lenses
This largely depends on your age. Under 40 you will probably get away with seeing most things becasue your other eye is compensating. Over 40 you will be slightly more long sighted (reading close up becomes a problem, you start holding things further away until your arms are not long enough)
Astigmatism will affect you more possibly during night time driving and detailed work as you may see shadows around letters especially those with high contrast. If tsuch symptoms are occurring then going for glasses may be a good idea.
Wearing glasses wont make your vision worse nor long term will it improve- because you have the astigmatism because of the shape of the eye. Glasses will act more as a crutch and while wearing them you will see clearly and there will be less strain on the eye especially for near vision e,g computer vision.
Re: Tescos giving free eyes test dont care if you get glasses from them or not. They got you through the front door and know you are most likely to do some grocery shopping while you are there. No matter where you get your eye test from Optoms have to do certain checks in reards to prescription and health so your astigmatism would have been flagged up anywhere.
Astigmatism doesnt reduce peripheral vision either..
