I travel to Morocco in mid December and am trying to arrange for some vaccinations. Yes I know I am a little late in trying to arrange this.

I have just been told that my local GP/Medical Centre do not have any appointments before my Hols!

What can I do now?

Can I try and see another NHS Centre to get the jabs? Do I have to go private? If so, where can I get a list of private Doctors that could provide me with Vaccinations? Roughly how much do these jabs cost privately? (£5? £20? £200??)

Help!

Have you only spoken to the reception gestapo? I'd get onto the practice manager and explain the situation and see if theres anything they can do to fit you in... Suggest how bad it would be if you got Malaria and just happened to tell the media you were unable to get an appointment for a month winkbiggrin

Very, very unlikely you'll catch malaria in Morocco.Likewise Typhoid or Hep A,Polio or

Tetanus.Although the Dep. Of Health recommends them it's 'wrapped in cotton wool' rubbish

more or less.Don't drink the tap water and don't make friends with the local wildlife.(stray

cats,dogs etc.)

Ring and find out?

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I rang them back and they have been able to squeeze me in for a few weeks time.

Close call - must get more organised!!!!

Been to Morocco a couple of times. Never bothered with vaccines other than the usual ones I have.

As has been said, avoid tap / water seller water. Drink from a bottle only. Food wise look for places that are busy etc and you'll be fine.

If you get no where with the reception staff and their computer screen, it is your right to ask the doctor to ring you back the same day.

Ask for this and explain what you are trying to do, they normaly have a better approach.

I have to walk into the doctors and hand over a written statement for a repeat acid pill prescription, but one time at band camp I ran out but I work in Swindon and my docs is in Bristol.

I rang and asked could I fax / Email said declaration and was told no way only in person, but I am 40 miles away. I got the doc to ring me back and explained and he left a perscription at the desk for me to collect after work.

cue Practice Manager quoting the fact that travel vaccs are not a GMS service

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Travel-immunisation/P...

a lot of GP practices have got out of vaccination other than the childhood ones under pressure from the PCTs, once upon a time it was quite common for potential student HCPs and members of SJA and BRC to be able to get their Hep B vaccinations done either free or for the cost of 3 *fp 10s , a lot will not now do this ...

Local practices write private prescriptions for Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis vaccines but don't charge for administration

I got my travel vaccines done last year for a trip to Egypt, my own practice wanted to charge me silly money to get them done (I'm a student with little money else I'd have no qualms about paying). We have to have Hep B, TB, cpox etc done for my work in healthcare, so I went along to our occupational health dept and asked if they would do it, they said they wouldn't even though I could potentially bring back infections and go straight onto a ward full of immunocompromised patients!

Luckily managed to temp. register as a patient at another practice and get them done for free.
