Knees keep giving me pain and sometimes giving way going downstairs. Pain is on the outside of the knee and feels like ligament or cartlidge. I'm 6ft 3 and 15 stone used to do a lot of power lifting in my 20's am now 46. My dad and two of his brothers have had new knees. Is there some kind of support i could wear round my knee at work as i drive 2500 miles a week. Thanks in advance.

Does it cause pain when keeping it in the same position for a while, IE do you have to stretch every do often?

Pain normally going up or downstairs, i couldn't creep up on anybody as it makes cracking noises when i walk. Moving it back and forwards although making it noisier eases the pain and stiffness

noticed any redness, swelling or heat around the joints? how long has it been going on for, and has the problem been getting worse, or has it stayed pretty much the same since its onset?

Heat on the outside of the right knee, swollen on the inside. Looks like viens but not as swollen as the varicose ones i had removed from my left shin in 98.

right - plenty of q's here so bare with.... due to trying to do this online, can't exactly ask specific questions or it'll take weeks...

is it tender/painful if you put pressure on it? noticed any stiffness/loss of range of motion? is the pain located on the right side of the knee when walking up/down stairs, or is it elsewhere? where exactly? does it ache after prolonged sitting?

has it been getting worse and worse, or does the pain come and go with weeks/months in between? you're sure there was no trauma/event that triggered it? does your knee click when you flex/extend it?

pain on the outside of the knee is most commonly presented in ilio-tibial band (friction) sydrome. may be worth looking that up to see if those symptoms match yours, but it's usually worse during/after activity. could also be something called bursitis (plenty of bursae around knee!!!)

generally speaking, redness and swelling is not often associated with osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease.

Thanks for your help, forgot to mention i moved in to a second floor apartment 2 months ago, noticed it more since then. I found this weekend that if i point my right foot out slightly to the side when going downstairs it doesn't hurt my knee at all.
Tender and slightly swollen on inside of right knee, also viens that look like a big bruise that have been there a few years on inside of right knee.
Knee starts clicking after i've extended it a few times.
Would be most painful if i tried to sit cross legged as it doesnt like bending sideyways.
Inside of knee hurts going upstairs outside going downstairs.

possibly, though this wouldn't account for the clicking (which could be due to number of things)

best to go and get it seen to tbh

I am going out on a limb here but heyho.

OP are you a truck driver? The reason I ask is that I was a truck driver for years, then one day my left knee gave way and on the floor I went. It swelled up and took a while to clear.

Over the years it would go if I jumped off the trailer or pressed the clutch to fast.

I gave up driving 12 or so years ago and became a Infrastucture engineer in computers, but still this requires me to put a lot of pressure on my knees when installing servers into racks.

Over the years it got worse to a point I got an auto car, and even more to the point when just turning around would pop the knee.

In the end I had a arthroscopy, http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/arthroscop... in which they found some cartilage problem and removed it. And since then it has been fine although it does become sore now and again but no collapsing or swelling.

On a side note years of truck driving weakened my right hand / wrist so that it develops ganglions from time to time.

In which case (and given the increase in stair use) I suspect it's just an ITB friction or Patello-femoral (ie the joint between your kneecap and knee) problem. It certainly sounds mechanical if you can affect it by altering the pressure on your knee.

Best go see a physio who can have a proper look and give you some exercises and stretches to sort it out.

Thanks for that, feels mechanical and seems to be improving now that i'm trying to protect it from further wear and tear.

Yes i'm a trucker, have been jumping out of the cab and off the back for the best part of 20 years i've now started using the cab steps, probably too little too late but it seems to be improving slightly. Thanks for the help.

I've had two knee ops and the main physio afterwards is to strengthen your quad muscles as much as you can, so leg press etc.

getting some stripping and cross friction done on my ITB on friday....hmmmm fun laugh

mine's getting tighter and tighter as i've really upped the miles i do at running now (approx 35 a week) and it often clicks over my greater trochanter (that ones for bill smile ) and last thing i want is a trochanteric bursitis.

oddly though, no pain yet whatsoever. i could play it like a guitar though it's so tight hehe

Having problems with my right knee as well. I haven't done any cardio for almost 4 weeks now.

Doc has said I have water on the knee and has given me some pills but there isn't much improvement after a week.

I think mine has to do with the ITB band as well and therefore I have start doing yoga laugh (just a DVD at home). Some of the positions really stretch the hamstrings and hips and after a couple of sessions the pain has eased a little and I can feel the difference in my back.

I would love to get to a physio but they are just too expensive for the amount of work I need!

I've got Ankylosing spondylitis and im currently under physio/hydro therapy via the NHS. I've also got flat knees which causes major issues with patella tracking and ITB tension/stress.

The NHS physio im under right now is bloody brilliant, today in the hydro pool she noticed a single muscle in my back that wasn't working...ten minutes later working on said muscle and I can move my shoulders again.

Utterly brilliant, its like night and day....im sore as hell after this afternoons stretching, but hey, its a start and I can see some light at the end of the tunnel now smile

Sounds great. Would love to get a physio on the NHS but my doctor seems to like X-Rays, Anti-Inflammatory tablets and blood tests at the moment.

I would love to get down to the cause of my problems. I've been in pain for the past 7 months with either back, hip or knee issues but there hasn't been a solution yet.

I might just have to twist his arm to get a referral.

My symptoms were similar to yours, pain going down stairs and when driving. I go cross country running and the pain became unbearable when running downhill so Dr Google came up with this and it cured my knee pain...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t32xJspx50o

using one of these...

http://www.physiosupplies.com/acatalog/White_Foam_...
(Read the user product reviews)

What impressed me most was that I noticed benefits very quickly.

I believe the pain originated because I tore my ankle ligaments and the physio sold me some orthotic insoles which may have thrown my knees out of whack or irritated an an already tight ITB. Plus whilst incapacitated waiting for the ankle to mend (6 weeks) I did a lot of air squats. Several months later the knees complained. So I tosssed out the orthotics and did the above exercise.
