Hi All,

I was taught years ago that mono-unsaturated fats lower cholesterol, polyunsaturates have no effect on cholesterol and saturated fats increase cholesterol.

My question is how many mono-unsaturates does a food need when compared to its amount of saturated fats to make it a cholesterol lowering food?

Is is a one on one basis? 5g saturated and 5g mono has no bad effect?

Walkers Ready Salted crisps, for example, contains 0.7g saturated, 6.8g mono-unsaturated and 0.7g polyunsaturated. Does this mean that they are a cholesterol lowering food? Seems a bit odd.

Cheers.

No one knows? Wow! I thought that there was no question the Pistonhead collective could not awnser.

Perhaps I should have posted in Food and Drink for a bit more exposure.

Just when I thought I had it all sussed.....

Interesting article. I always use olive oil anyway rather than just a standard vegetable oil. I would be surprised if any margarines still used hydrogenated fats as the dangers of those are quite well known. I am tempted to get myself some organic butter now to have with my crusty bread for lunch. lick I usually have Benocol or Bertolli.
