My right index finger has swollen up and is very red. Started on Thurs last week, went to Drs on Fri on the advice of the pharmacist as it was spreading down towards my knuckle and got some penicillin. It is now Monday and the throbbing/heat/pain/swolleness is still there. No sign of it "bursting" or coming to a head.

Other than stabbing it with a needle, which I really couldn't face, I am not sure how much longer I can take this. Anyone else had this? Did it take long to go away?

Pic no prob, will get one, hold on.

I think it was gardening recently. I remember something stabbing my finger and causing me to say ouch as I was clearing away a pile of dead tomato plants.

Not sure it'll burst as such. There's probably a foreign body in there, and what with the spate of problems in London, you may well find an entire Lithuanian family living there. That's the thing about thorns - if you see if under the skin, you need to dig it out with a needle.

As annoyingly H&S as it sounds, I suppose this is a fairly good reason to wear gloves while gardening.

Lol, there would be enough room in there for a family!

frown Was looking forward to some pus at some stage. Cant see the foreign body as yet, let's hope it makes an appearance soon.

I did have gloves on, but I think I had better invest in some thicker ones.

I would have thought that trying to burst it could cause further problems if you don't know what you are doing, especislly if there doesnt seem to be any puss visible. It will help to bathe it in warm water (actually as hot as you can sensibly stand))with plenty of table salt added, this will soothe it a bit and help fight the infection. (I had something similar and this helped alot)

Make sure you are taking the penicillin at the right intervals and obeying the rules on with or without food as per the leaflet that came with the drugs.

This, plus go and see your GP again tomorrow if it's no better.

Cheers guys. Have just bathed it in hot water - feck it was painful! I think I can now see a bit on there which is slightly yellowing where the foreign body must be. Will keep bathing and see what occurs!

It's not unknown for a thorn puncture wound to become infected like your finger.

It would be wise to get a Tetanus jab in case of further complications.(septicemia)

I had something very similar. Squeezed it and a load of puss came out, but the swelling came back again and again. One day in the pub, give it another sly squeeze and loads of puss came out, more than ever before. Looked at it a bit closer and what was causing the infection was an eye lash that had got in the corner of my nail. Pain lifted straight away too.

That's it! The Dr mentioned a word beginning with P. Seems too much washing up can cause it.... 'bout time I got him indoors to buy me a dishwasher wink
