Why, when out and about in the crisp autumn air, does one's snot adopt a more fluid consistency?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Speaking off the top of my head it's a matter of condensation. Basically cold air meets warm nose, drip drip.

Must be more to it than that, shirley? Bunged up noses are always worse indoors, and seem to clear a little out in the cold.

the reason bunged noses clear when its cold is that the drop in temp reduces blood flow and therefore any inflammation in the sinuses.

the runny nose in the cold could well be condensation, but what is the effect of hot curry, which often produces the same watery experience.
