Hi

I know internet diagnosis is impossible but please humour me smile

Ironically I just posted on another thread about suffering knee problems, however this is my good one!

Last night I had the most horrible acute pain in my knee.
It came on as I squatted down to full flexion with my weight on it and was the most awful pain Ive ever had - and I have had renal colic
I had to lie down for 10-20 secs when it mostly went
It was at the lateral side of my knee just behind the hamstring insertion

I could get up and fully weight bear almost straight away
After that it felt and looked OK

This morning its a bit tender if I fully flex it however looks and feels fine
My calf is good too
There really is no evidence that anything bad happened

Im just wondering what could have given me such an acute intense pain and then settled
Dr Google isnt that helpful

If it helps Im a keen cyclist and rower

Cheers

Dr John

It sounds like a lateral meniscus tear (with all the caveats of on-line diagnosis). Did it lock at all or were you twisting as you squatted down? You should see your GP and, if it recurs, get a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon.

Many thanks
I know seeing my GP is the sensible option however Im fine today and work is too busy ATM for me to escape

I was just squating down, moving directly downwards with no twisting but quite quickly

The pain was enormous!! but only lasted a few seconds

My knee didnt lock and I could weight bear soon afterwards

Today has been fine too
Theres no swelling for bruising and no signs of any fluid collecting behind my knee or in my calf
Note I am not stupid enough to row or ride my bikes today though smile
(Although I have thought about it)

Has anyone ever had a ruptured Bakers cyst?
Or is that unlikely?

I just cant see what would give me so much pain but be fine soon afterwards

agree, but go to your GP if it reoccurs or becomes painful

Lateral meniscus tear, been there and done that. Go see your doctor and you'll probably be referred for x-rays and possibly CT scans. Fixing it is surprisingly easy (subject to your general health) and involves keyhole surgery. I was in and out of hospital in the same day and pretty much fully recovered in just over a week.
