So ADHD has a (tenuous) genetic basis?

Well it is definately the parent's fault then!

I remember at school, kids with ADHD were known as "thinkies" or "c**ts" ..

The woman responsible for this bit of research just got torn apart on Radio 4. It's a load of bks. The test sample of 360 "ADHD"kids who showed positive for this genetic code was about 16%. In non-"ADHD" kids it comes up in 10%.

Tenuous at best.

I thought it was just an excuse for chav kids to go on a destruction spree, or that they can go around swearing at people and blaming their adhd.

Surely this is a good thing, by applying the scientific principles used by the press, test everyone 'with' ADHD, and you'll be able to tell 84% that it's down to bad parenting and to stop acting like a .

I know that scientifically it should be more than that according to this study, but it's a start and it might just fly.

I heard some guy saying he realised he had the symptoms when his son was diagnosed.

Apparently his wife pointed it out to him that he sometimes focuses way too much on what he is doing..The total opposite of ADHD..rolleyes

The best bit of teaching I saw was when a lad at primary school told the teacher to fk off. The teacher grabbed said pupil by the collar and marched him into the toilets, he told us to watch and he literally washed the boys mouth out with soap and water.

At high school the maths teacher used to throw the wooden chalk duster at you, if you weren't paying attention. IMO ADHD is just another term for bad parenting, or spoilt kids. Things have gotten a little too soft in recent years!

To be fair, the kids are not always trouble makers or from poor homes.
I've had to deal with a couple in the past and it can be bloody frustrating trying to show them something.

The rolleyes should be aimed at you. Hyperfocussing is very much a symptom of ADHD. This is a perfect example of the general (and perfectly understandable) ignorance of genuine ADHD. The main probably with the public perception of ADHD is that it's over/inappropriately diagnosed.

It's the same with all "mental illness". The scientists/experts don't fully understand it so it's only natural that the lay-people won't either.

Please do, though, have an open mind about ADHD and other "mental illnesses" - don't dismiss all cases because of the majority of misdiagnoses.

SOmw ould argue that that's a fair reation from the teacher. Only when I was in school we used to throw it back, along with the chair we were sitting on. The teacher who throw it once never threw it again.

You can't teach 'recpect' and authority with violence.

clap

As someone who's been diagnosed as an adult it's frustrating to see the general levels of ignorance shown, no doubt perpetuated by over/misdiagnosis.

I was never what could be described as an ASBO or particularly disruptive kid and did well at school and university despite being undiagnosed. I've found medication to be very beneficial in a way difficult to describe to most people, and if you learn to channel the traits in the right way can be very positive.
