I have done something to my knee and I have no idea what/how. Hoping to get a doctor's appointment for Tuesday (next day off work), until then I was wondering if any PHers can recommend what to do.
Woke up yesterday morning with my knee aching a bit but otherwise feeling okay. Woke up this morning with knee still aching and now it clicks painfully if I bend it (when I say "click" I mean I can feel it clicking/grinding).
I've got one of those knee support things which is helping because it's stopping me from bending my knee if I walk but it's still aching when I'm simply sitting down.
Anyone got any idea what I could have done to it? I don't do any high-impact sports but I'm on my feet all day because of work, and I've never had knee injuries in the past. And does anyone know if there's something/anything I can do to stop the aching?

Rest, ice (bags of frozen peas are ideal), compression, elevation and get on the anti-inflammatories asap.
I had exactly the same thing following a summer warehouse job where I was on my feet all day. I literally woke up with it and had somehow done it in my sleep. My GP advised me to go to A&E in order to get into the system for treatment quicker.
A bucket-handle tear of the lateral meniscus (cartilage) was suspected since I was a competitive swimmer as a teenager, however this wasn't confirmed by arthroscopy. The verdict was that the cruciate ligaments inside the knee were bruised due to hyperextension of the joint. (I have a greater range of movement in my joints than most people - no idea why.)
However it took 3 months to heal.

Sounds like it could be a simple sprain or as MC has said a meniscus tear. Regular analgesia, please do not go to the GP having taken nothing, winds the medical profession up! Take paracetamol and ibuprofen if able as per packet advice, not just one tablet here and there. Ice, elevate and rest. Compression is not really advised anymore.
Do not go to A&E unless very painful, unable to walk or swollen loads, it won't get you anywhere quicker. We just refer back to your gp for referral.
