I was channel hopping earlier and landed on a programme about sleep where they said that the healthy amount of sleep an adult should get is 8 hours. Does anybody on here sleep for 8 hours a night? I usually manage 4 on a weekday and a maximum of 6 on the weekend - is that abnormal, and am I causing myself harm?

IMHO if you feel ok and can function properly on little sleep, then why not! I get kinda sick of what we should do and don't and all the healthy living crap we're force fed, If you feel lack of sleep affects you then sleep longer, if not then go for it!

Thanks, reading the above has started me yawning.
Have heard of this eight hours before but, think it all depends on the individual. Some need more sleep than others. Me, sometimes it's two or three hours and other times as much as nine hours. Yawn.

I function better with around 8-10 hours but my girlfriend can cope quite well with only 6 hours sleep. Its all down to the individual.

I sleep on average about 7 hours. Usually wake up after that duration. It's all down to how much your body needs to recover. Some nights may be 5 hours, others may be 8.

I can be fully awake after 4 hours of sleep, however if I was to have 8 hours, I could wake up tired and grumpy...

8 is a sweet number if you can get it everynight

for the last few weeks i have been sleeping at 3-4am and getting up for work at 8-8.30.

i do usually have a proper sleep catchup of about 12 hours on the weekend tho

I always try and do 8 hours. I can't seem to function with much less unless there is a special occasion involved wink

I've only managed 5 tonight, and I've got a 500 mile drive back home tonight overnight which is a bummer, as I was hoping for a good night last night.

My sleep can range from 3 hours to a maximum of 7, rarely any more. My lack of sleep is almost certainly fuelled by the fact I own a business and I am always in work mode. Even on holiday currently, I woke up because I needed to send a few emails, check the bank and have a general think about strategy for September.

I'm now in France watching Lotus Racing on Sky waiting for the ankle biters to surface so we can enjoy our last day. God it's quiet when everyone else is in the land of nod!

If i'm working days i like to get around 6 hours, if i'm on nights then i try for 8-10 hours in bed. Nights are the only time i get the bed to myself so i like to make the most of it and stretch out. Generally on the first day off of any shift pattern i can get an easy 12 hours.

When i was younger i used to have 3-4 hours a night for about two weeks, then sleep for a full day when i couldn't hack it any longer. Looking back i don't know how i managed it.

I think 4-6 hours is fine for a while but I really do believe you should try and get more than that evry few days.

I can cope most of the time on 6 hours sleep but every few days I need to try and grab a couple of hours more kip(somehow!)

The only way to know if it'd work for you is to try and get a longer nights sleep (e.g. 3 or 4 6hr nights on the trot and see if you feel any better as a result)

Some people sleep too much (9-10hrs) and I think that is just as bad.

You posted this at half past midnight.

Go to bed at a reasonable time, and you'll get more than 4 hours sleep, you muppet.

This is what annoys me - too little sleep and you're a mess, too much sleep and you're a mess.

It's finding the ideal amount in the middle. Impossible.
