Not the nicest subject but I'm wondering if anyone has experience of this kind of skin problem...

Especially in stressful times, I get one or more small, angry spots, about 3-4mm in diameter. They're very painful, in a red-hot needle sort of a way, and only put out a watery serum...i.e. no pus.

They won't heal unless I can get the core out. This is a tough, white, rubbery core that I can only describe as being like a tiny tusk, about 4mm long and 2mm thick. These take some getting out.

As for location, these eruptions tent to appear mostly on my neck, though they can turn up on my face, usually on the cheek. BTW, I'm 55.

My GP said I should only have antibiotics if I get major crops of these things. The Boots pharmacist was of no help.

Any experience of this or similar? Or any ideas?

Thanks

Do you exfoliate?

Topical antibiotics wills help, but you need to prevent rather than treat after the irruption.

do you have any other problems with your skin, like face feeling tight, itchy, red looking?

Are they not warts? The core bit suggests wart more than spot. Usually caused when you have a low immune system.

I sometimes get these if I am very stressed or run down - lots of people do. Things like exfoliation/taking care of your skin in general will help but only to a certain extent, the real key is to stay as healthy as possible in general and try and manage your stress as boring as that sounds! One thing I would say is don't squeeze them before they are ready - I know it is so tempting but you will just make it angry/possibly infected and it will take longer to heal. Leave them till they are really ripe (sorry for squeamish/easily disgusted) then steam your face, then put your fingers in a tissue and squeeze. Like you say, once you have got the core out they will heal, if you don't get it then they were't ready.

Thanks, Peeps,

No, I have no face feeling tight, itchy, red looking and I know for a fact they aren't warts. I had a wart on my hand; it resisted the freezing treatment so they ultimately took it off with a TIG welder thingy. It never came back.

These things are definitely stress-related...my Mum died recently and I had an operation 2 weeks later. I'm also taking injections for MS and these are immunosuppressant. That said, the irruptions never correlated with this...I had about three years without them while taking the interferon jabs. And I'm too old school to have ever exfoliated!

Topical antibios sound like a good plan. I assume they're a prescription item?

Sounds like you should look at improving your immune system, anyway, then.

Please give the exfoliating a go, especially around the facial hair area, as blocked hair folicals from shaving can irritate, you can pick up a cheap one in the supermarket and just use it whilst showering, takes seconds to give the skin a quick scrub.

Topical antibiotics, prescription only and need replacing every 4 weeks.

Makes me laugh "I'll give exfoliating a try"...you should do it nearly everyday anyway, all over your body not just your face.

Not gay?

But you probably look disgusting with spots on your face...

Wasching the surface of your skin with something smooth like a sponge or hands cleans almost nothing off. You need a proper sponge with a rough pad to get all the dead skin off, daily, and you need to buy a facewash with real bits in it so it feels like grit rubbing the st off your face, or you're going to look like a spotty mess.

This is a good reasonably priced one, no overly girly smell either http://www.boots.com/en/Nivea-For-Men-Exfoliating-...

Try using something with less "extras" in tbh. Simple is a good brand (which I use daily) they do exfoliating washes etc.
Or if you don't mind spending abit extra go for the dermatologica (sorry if its spelt wrong) mens range.

I've been gradually introducing my partner to this as he gets some nasty spots on his forehead and cheeks, since using the same stuff as me he's hardly had any.
