I'm currently down in the Falklands and as such have far too much time on my hands, to help pass the time I shall be hitting the gym big time with the intention of improving my muscles.

To that end shall I bother with protein supplements or not?

The last time I has a 3 month gym session I had access to MetRx protein for free so was more than happy to use it, certainly at the end I was in the best muscle condition of my life, how much of this was down to protein I guess I'll never know.

This time round I will have to pay for it myself, I must admit the prospect of spending at least £100 on protein isn't delighting me!

So, for someone who is already physically fit and is comfortable in the gym is it worth it?

Getting massive is not the goal but neither is simply toning up, somewhere in between would be nice!

If you don't want to bulk up and you're eating correctly you don't need protein.

I'd suggest protein drinks would be very beneficial to your training.

You'll not get enough protein from a military diet if you're training hard I suspect (I did 7 years in the RN but managed to avoid exile to the Falklands!).

Here's a good link with lots of great information in it and a protein calculator;
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calpro.htm

The biggest single thing that will hinder your progress is a lack of protein.

Your goal appears to be the same as mine but it sounds like you have more time. smile
If you are able to get in the suggested six meals a day without resorting to supplements then go for it. If that's impractical then go the supplements route.

What's wrong with using suppliements?

Nowt. I prefer to eat real food but often time/conditions don't allow so I resort to supplements.

Complete waste of money. Nice little earner for those companies involved though. The mark up on whey protein powder must be astronomical.

He may or may not achieve his goals,he might get bored, he might fall in love. one things for sure, his wallet will be lighter after purchasing one of those fantasy whey powder supplements. We live in a developed country where food is actually thrown away! I dont know what people in developing countries would think if they saw us buying mega exspensive dried milk when we have cheap food available. If you feel hungry, eat,if not dont. simple. The biggest test most of us will face come 35+ is middle age spread, not which brand of protein powder to buy.

If you want to gain muscle you HAVE to eat, even if you don't feel like it. Don't feel like eating but still want to gain muscle? This is where the protein shake comes into its own..

Why thank you.

Now maybe we want to return to the actual subject rather than discussing the middle aged spread.

bks. You have an opinion but it's blatantly untrue to say it's a waste of money. There are many circumstances when it's not feasible or practical to get the calorie intake required in good time without resorting to a well tested and proven alternative.

Protein supplements,Creatine etc all rubbish unless you're a competitive bodybuilder.

Which I doubt anyone on here is,you just play at weights.
