SWMBO had her wisdom teeth pulled out yesterday, and is not a happy bunny. Three just pulled out, one needed an incision and stitching. Official advice is paracetamol and ibuprofen, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Have been to the chemist for some paracetamol + codeine.

Wondering whether benzocaine based throat spray (Ultra Chloraseptic) would be any help or should be avoided?

Try Co-codamolit might work but the next step up really is getting some morphine off your doctors.

Just tell her to man up and ignore the pain.

I think I'd be the one needing morphine if I did that! hehe

Tramadol.

Not to be taken for too long however...

Hmm. So either ponce a joint from someone or see the quack tomorrow for something stronger smile

Anybody know whether the benzocaine spray would actually do any harm?

In all seriousness, she's best to avoid smoking anything whilst there are three open wounds in her mouth.

I would wager that smoke is fairly bacteria free - unless bacteria can survive 800 degrees plus

Benzocaine will do no harm whatever.Use it on myself when I have a chronic inflamed gum.

Yep.

I'd rather use a topical spray/lozenge than take an opiate pain killer for tooth pain.

My wisdom teeth play up from time to time and I'm loathe to use cocodamol as it blunts my concentration too much.

Nothing to do with bacteria. It's the smoke vs blood clot, sucking (of smoke) vs blood clot and chemicals in the smoke vs blood clot that she'd need to worry about.

All dentists said:
Those people who smoke tend to have more complications with extraction site healing (including the development of " dry sockets") than people who don't. If you can avoid smoking for the first 48 hours after your tooth extraction, it would be to your benefit.

Thanks everyone - she's been to see her GP today and got some stronger painkillers with a higher dose of codeine (30mg/tab, two to be taken), so we'll see how that goes.
