Just wanted to let off some steam regarding the way my daughter has been treated by her GP Practice.
She suffers from Epilepsy and NEAD Seizures and has been kicked out of the Practice for using them too much.
Below is an extract from a letter I intend to send to them and the County Health Authority. I think that its fairly clear why I am particularly pissed at the moment.
..........................
Fourth, Did it not occur to the spineless amongst you that decency would dictate that you write to our Daughter, warning her of your concerns and, if necessary, arrange a meeting with her to discuss how to better deal with her problems and so reduce costs, rather than simply kick her out of your practice.
It would appear not.

We would like to thank Ms ##### for “generously” providing our Daughter with 2 weeks supply of her epilepsy medication on Friday but point out that we do not see this as a generous gesture. Our Daughter, as offered in your letter, wanted to discuss the situation before she sought a new Medical Practice and so was not derelict in her responsibilities, rather, we feel that the ####### Practice was derelict in their inability to honor the contents of their own letter.
With this and the kinds words caringly offered our Daughter regarding the death of her grandfather and funeral the previous day along with the severe stress caused by the letter itself and the accompanying letter from the County Health Authority we feel sure were fully responsible for our Daughter suffering a seizure at the top of the second flight of stairs as she attempted to leave the practice in a very distressed state. Isn’t it ironic that it was Dr #### who came as a representative of the ###### Practice and showed so much concern towards her as she lay unconscious at the foot of the stairs. My heart was so touched by the way you carefully assisted in securing the neck brace and spinal board and then assisting in lifting her onto the waiting Ambulance trolley.
It occurred to me that maybe you would have preferred my 22 year old Daughter be dropped off at the town Tip on the way to the Hospital, That would surely have completed your intended actions.
..............

The letter contains a lot more and I will need to 'edit' some of the contents but I need to let them know what a shower of absolute ######## they are.
That all said I will be discussing all this with my Solicitor first.

Thanks, has crossed my mind.
I am sick to death of watching her be ill treated.
Think I'll speak with my Solicitor first. Dont want to leave myself open to a law suit.

So she as kicked out from her GP as she used them too much? FFS. Some people need GPs more than others surely. I got told off at my last one for having 24 appointments one year - I had a very high risk pregnancy and didn't heal properly afterwards. They did tell me that I used them a lot but not too much.
I think you do need to see a solicitor. I suppose it must be legal to kick patients off your list of they use you too much - but some practice has got to take her on... we are all entitled to treatment are we not?

Thanks for your comments.
I will copy the local MP in(good idea)when I respond.

I have heard of this sort of thing before but to be warning pregnant women !!!
Anyone with genuine problems should be protected from this sort of thing.
The 2 quacks involved didnt even have the decency to sign the letter.
They had the Practice manager act as their back bone in their absence.

Suffice to say my wife myself and the 2 kids have a combined 120 years at that practice which will end this week.

It's outrageous on the face of it, but I wonder what their side of the story is....

Thats awful, a girl at work who suffers from terrible back pain has been told she can't return to that practice because they have given her all the medication possible, and she needs to speak to a specialist!

It's a pretty bad letter - many people do what you've done and fill a letter with sarcasm when they want to remain "polite" yet get the point over that they're mega pissed....it just ends up reading very badly.

Ask yourself what your objective is in writing then go over it and decide if each line is achieving your objective. (unless your objective was to load it with sarcasm)

To be fair that's not that unreasonable, if they can't do any more for her she's wasting everyone's time by coming back.

Doctors and GP's refer you to specialists... As an example, when I was like 14, I had acne and when all else failed they directed me to a dermatologist. If I had been told to find a specialist myself, then what was my mum and dad paying taxes for back then? They would have gone mental

I would not send a letter like that. If you needed to write something to 'vent' your feeling then fine, but what you have written serves little purspose than to show that you are angry. Rewrite it. State the facts, do it clearly and dispassionately. Explain the consequences of their actions and the affects it had and if so, continue to have.

Emotion in matters like this need to be measured, controlled and highly targeted. Don't send what you've got, it will just be seen as a rant and no one wants to 'deal' with rants. Think like a clinician and an administrator and write it with deliverables in mind; what's the point of the letter? what are your objectives?

As for your own personal anger and bitterness. Sort them out first. Within them lies the reasons why you feel the way you do. Get to the root of them and the letter will be a whole lot more focused than it currently reads.

All the best.

Thanks for all of the replys.
Yes, the letter is fully of sarcasm and no I wont be sending it.
After 2 weeks of cooling down, finding new Doctor etc. I am sufficiently calm enough to now visit my Solicitor.
Yes, there is always 2 sides to every story and I have allways tried to consider both sides of arguments.
In this case we feel there are some questions need answering.
We have been asking for our daughter to receive counselling for 6 years.

I say 'kids' but they are 22 and 23 so yes the years quickly add up.

Again thanks. I very much appreciate the advice regarding the letter doing more harm than good.
I am not in to compensation and the action I take will be towards pushing the Regional Health Authority to review the details of the last 6 years.
The best for me would be that the Doctors Practice get a kick up the back side.

Final point, I recently visited the Practice and saw the Doctor most responsible.
I was complaining of chest pains and new and explained that it was a tight chest due to the stress of my work.
His reply was "what do you want me to do about it ? find another job".
Oh if life was so simple.

Why did they de-list her?
What provokes her pseudo-seizures?

If she is an adult she needs to complain, you can not.

Find another doctor. Your one sounds like a complete prick. Unfortunately for every excellent GP, there is one equally as ignorant and uncaring.

Hope Hospital did a very good investigative job and kept her in for over 2 weeks in which time she had had a couple of dozen seizures. She is also cinfirmed Epileptic for the last 6 years.
One problem is that the label pseudo seizures means, to some doctors, fake seizures.
I have quite a few examples where she has been treated outrageously. I seen an ambulance man anounce to the entire Job Center that she was faking and proceded to poke her in the eye. Yes I nearly poked his eye out. I could go on but........

Yes, you are correct its up to her to complain but again without going into all of the details, she needs our support to make a complaint but rest assured we will see it through.

Yes, job done and I will be seeing my new Doctor in a couple of weeks.
Again I egree, the Practice has 4 Doctors two of which are very good but unfortunately its the prick who 'owns' the show.
The third Doctor I had previously considered good but his was the second name on the letter.

Thanks again,
Tony.
