After a day spent in bed today after a heavy night last night, I started wondering why I drink copious amounts (yes, I like the taste, but I also like the taste of other non-alcoholic drinks) so I started wondering what reasons people have for being teetotal. There must be a few on here, is it just don't fancy the hangovers or do you have different reasons smile

Whenever I go out with friends I always choose to be the designated driver. Don't much care for the taste of alcohol, despite being a barman. Rather make sure everyone gets home safely after a good night!

Not teetotal by any means, but I've cut back significantly recently after my friend / neighbour nearly died of liver failure. Not a pretty sight and a hideous way to go. Friend seems to be pulling through, thank god, but still leaning heavilly on the self-distruct button; we've seen him drinking cider from a coffee mug early in the day, on numerous occassions. Kind of puts you off.

I tend to be the driver more often than not as to be honest I can either take it or leave it. I do find that I am more likely to be found on the dance floor when I have had a few but its a good night even if I am just on the J2O's

Sounds about the same as me.

Not Teetotal but can easily go with out. I did a 2 month stint not long ago just to prove this haha

Far from teetotal but I've done a lot less heavy drinking recently.

I just found it's more fun to have a few drinks, talk some nonsense then go home and sleep, and wake up the next day in a reasonable state. Rather than getting stupidly drunk, spending more than I can afford, embarrassing myself then waking up ill.

I don't know quite what flicked the switch but I just lost my appetite for getting completely wasted around the age of 30.

Same here but 25! I dont take hangovers well now at all. Takes me all the next day to recover.

I get some mickey taking off mates for this but also, its too expensive! I went into town the other week for a work mates birthday. Taxi to get there was £4.50, which was fair enough. Taxi home from exactly the same place 8 hours later was just over £10. I only had 4-5 pints too.

Probably from now on, i'll just drive in and stick to soft drinks when in town. I only tend to drink now if i go round a friends house and have somewhere to sleep without needing to drive home, I find having drinks round friends houses much more relaxed and enjoyable than town where everyone is hammered and your all crammed into a club no bigger than a shed frown

I have been a total drunk.
I have been Teetotal.

I have now found a happy medium that I call "The Drinking Buddha". Which is being able to have a drink in moderation on special occasions, but not going overboard. It took a while to find that balance though. It helps that I quite like being the designated driver.

Can take it or leave it, mostly leaving it but still like the occasional 12 hour bender in good company though.
White Russians are the way ahead, strong bones - don't break when you fall over.

Me and the missus are teetotal. Im Muslim, she has gotten drunk once about 10 years ago, found it horrible, and vowed never to drink again. We both dont see the point of getting drunk, and hate drunks.

Alot of people assume because shes Polish, she drinks loads, but even her family hardly ever have a drink. The last time I saw the OH's family have a drink was one small shot of rum (i think) to celebrate my birthday, and that's it.

I'm not teetotal but I don't drink much as I'm not keen on the taste. I also don't see the point in getting hog-whimpering drunk as it's just a waste of money and time, I can enjoy a night out just as much as anyone only without the feeling that someone is drilling inside my skull the morning after.

Been teetotal for well over 20 years now: went from wasted every weekend, and no recollection of most Saturday nights, to no alcohol at all - literally overnight and not regretted it once since!

Much prefer driving to drinking and what I save by not drinking has paid for some very nice toys over the last 20+ years smile

Do you have to be teetotal? Why not just one and then non-alcoholic for the rest of the evening? That's what I do. There are plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available now so it's not like you have to drink water all night.

I also find that a break of a week or more makes me sharper. The last couple of weeks I've been drinking most nights. Not fall over stupid drunk, but enough to feel it. I'm going to lay off it now for a week or two.

After a long stint on some medication that meant I couldn't drink for 3 months when I was in my 2nd year at university I can pretty much take it or leave it. I don't buy into this whole macho "I can drink 15 pints so I'm a real man!" bks so I only drink what I want when I want.

As an aside I usually find that the people who mock me for spending so much on fuel for my car are usually the people pissing £60 a night up the wall twice a week.

My outlook exactly; there are occasions when there's nothing quite like a drink or two, but for me drinking to the point of being plastered is just a waste of money with no beneficial outcome other than a stomping headache the next morning - I'd much rather be spending my money on something else.

Have gone from drinking most nights (and being a bit of a fk up to be honest) to the occasional blow out, and odd glass of wine with dinner if the food warrants it. It does help when it costs £7-8 a pint though...

I'm drinking too much at the moment. Had a two week holiday in which I drank too much every single night.

Had a couple of weeks completely free of alcohol after that and i felt much better in every way, not groggy in the morning, sharper in work, feel better, look livlier.

Still enjoy having a drink, acting stupid, talking rubbish then finding my way home to bed on a Saturday night though.

Not teetotal but I cut mine back dramatically after I realised that I kept waking up feeling ike st and it wasn't doing me any good. Plus it started making me terribly depressed. So now I don't drink at home anymore (made a big difference)and might have a pint or two if I go out, but that's it. I feel a hell of a lot better for it but wouldn't preach at anybody, so long as you can handle it then you'll be alright.
