Intestinal Noise
Discussion
This is really annoying me now, sometimes, usually in the middle of a meeting or some other quiet situation I find my intestines make a gurgling noise, much like your gut does when you're hungry, but it's lower down and more audible. It's not painful or anything, just annoying!
Clearly, it's quite embarrassing and distracting so I'd like to be able to stop it. After calling my GP I was told 'we all have intestines that makes noises', great. I've read that wheat/lactose could be causing me problems, and I've tried to cut them down a bit, but really can't see any difference. Is it likely I've developed some sort of intolerance to different food groups or is it likely to be something more than that?

I sometimes suffer from this, and I know exactly what you mean about meetings. I usually keep some settlers in my desk drawer and munch on one or two just before a meeting. Alternately, I excuse myself from the meeting for a few minutes for a loo break and go and eat a cereal bar or a banana.
I always put it down to nerves as it gets worse depending on the seriousness/level of the meeting.

Growling guts sounds have a proper name: borborygmi (pronounced BOR-boh-RIG-mee).

As soon as you feel a 'growl' coming on, pull your abdominal muscles in and up. This doesn't stop the noise completely, but it does make it quieter.
Beer and bread are common culprits for causing bloating and farting. Try cutting these out completely and see if it makes a difference.
