Initial consultation with GP

2 weeks later I get a letter saying they cant do it

Phone call to national line to find an appropriate treatment centre (as well as answering allergy questions etc)

1 week later I get a letter from the treatment centre saying yes they can do it

Phone call to make an appointment at the treatment centre and answer the same questions again

2 weeks later I attend the centre and spend over an hour being poked, prodded, swabs taken and filling in forms - containing the questions I'd already answered.

2 weeks after that I will actually go in for the op

The operation : removal of a sebaceous cyst from my shoulder. Should take the surgeon between 5 and 10 minutes start to finish I reckon.

Absolutely ridiculous process! I also got to see 2 IT guys wandering around updating each individual computer in the wing in turn - wonder if they ever hard of centralised update systems? I also liked the username and password taped to a bit of paper next to the screen on one computer.

Thats a hell of a wait for an operation to get a cyst removed. My local GP does them himself.

While there are undoubtedly problems in the NHS, and I have posted about them before on here, they do get a lot of things right.

My mum's partner was called to have a colonoscopy last week as a result of some abnormal results from a faecal occult blood test (this should be sent to everyone over 60 - for goodness sake do it and send it back). The examination revealed some polyps which were biopsied and found to be cancerous. He is going for a full body CT this week to check for metastases and is in the following week to have his large intestine removed.

The total time from the initial examination to surgery is going to be about 2 and half weeks, and it is only as a result of the screening that he knew anything about it - he had no symptoms at all.
