I am considering getting one...
I am working longer and longer hours. I used to get out and play tennis for about 6 hours a week, but now I am down to about 2. I walk from my house to the station 1 mile, and a mile from station at other end to work. So about 4 miles a day. I work on the second floor and take the stairs rather than the lift. I take the stairs where there is the option at stations too, I also run up the escalators.
I actually think I still need a helping hand... I dont eat badly at all in my opinion....
I thought that as I am still at work quite late and on my own sometimes, I thought it wouldnt do any harm using it in the evenings whilst working.

Anyone have any views on whether it is a waste of time??

Thanks
Dom

If you already have a very lower body fat % (i.e. some or all of your abs are already visible) then an aid like slendertone will be helpful to some extent providing you use it as part of a wider workout schedule.

But what it won't do is help you reduce fat.

I bought one a few years ago when I first decided to tone up. I'm not fat just wanted some definition. Was ok and felt like a mini ab work out but to be honest looking back it was pretty poor. I now just do 10-20 mins of ab exercises a day (plus a few gym classes) a week and my abs have finally appeared. A definite four pack, almost 6. This exercise coupled with a better diet worked.

The slendertones are ok but a really good 10 minute ab session a day will do more for you. Plus if you wear the belt when sitting at a desk it doesnt work as well, because you naturally slouch a bit and so the pads are not in quite the right place. I found you only got a good (relatively) workout with one if you laid down.

Save your money and put it towards a really useful bit of exercise equipment and then just look up some simple ab exercises and they will soon appear if your diet is ok.

To answer your first question. Im not fat. I weigh 73kg, I am 6ft, and wear 32 inch trousers which are a little loose.

One question I did have is surely the contracting of the muscles makes the muscles grow therefore giving you a higher metabolism therefore you lose weight??

or am I wrong? I mean does doing 100 sit ups make you lose weight?

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I really am pushed for time, I leave the house at 6am and dont get back until 10pm. I wont be able to do the ab exercises at work, so I was looking for something I could do in adition rather than replace something I am already doing... I could also do it standing up on the train?

muscles need fuel so if you exercise they will use up nutrients in your body so you will loose weight. But I'm sure I read somewhere that muscles don't use stored fat for growth as it's too difficult to break down.

A mix of cardio and resistance work is always best. Cardio will burn fat fast and the resistance will build your mucles which will appear bigger because of any fat lost during the cardio. Plus cardio will naturally build muscle too, legs etc, even abs as you hold your core still when you run for example.

Am no expert so happy to be corrected.

ah sorry, I see your point now. In which case maybe a belt will be good, in addition to what you already do. At least you are doing something during your busy day.

Be warned though that they are a bit uncomfortable and on a highish setting that can cause you to make the odd involuntary jerking movement, which might not be good on a train!

Make sure you always walk around all day with your abs engaged, this will help your posture plus help strengthen the muscles without really trying.

What do you actually hope to acheive with a Slendertone?

Fat loss? Not going to happen with a Slendertone even if you wore it all day long. Sorry.

More defined abs? This is really down to your BF %. You could have abs the size of Baked Bean cans and not be able to see them if they're covered with a layer of fat.

People see these as an easy way to get in shape.
The sellers see these people as an easy way to get rich..

All IMHO of course.

all I really want to achieve is the same as what I would achieve with doing 100 sit ups a day.
I used to do that a year ago, and it took away the pain in my back and made me feel alot fitter.
Thats all I am expecting.

Sorry to spoil the party, but you won't achieve that with a slendertone. How long would 100 sit ups take? 5 mins? Better get up 5 minutes earlier.

Right, I'm going to stick my neck out here and go against the flow.

I've been on a low GI, no carbs diet for about eight or nine weeks, have lost about 17kgs, gone down a couple of sizes waistline and neck, my moobs have gone, my belly is going away, cheeks and chin are no longer pudgy, and I've thinned out pretty well all over. I am now getting down to the weight I want to level out at, but still got a bit around the middle which is being stubborn, but I don't want to thin out elsewhere anymore.

So, I need to excercise that area. I know people are saying these things build muscle tone, and don't burn fat, and all the reviews say they are rubbish.

But hell, it's working for me. I can't be arsed with crunches and all that excercise mallarkey. After about two weeks I now do about an hour at a time in front of the telly each evening, on the highest 150 setting. And it's knackering. This thing puts some power though, the contractions are fierce. No way is this not burning something! How can it not be?

Anyway, it is doing what it says on the tin, for me at least.

I think a lot of men are similar in that the last place from which you lose bodyfat is from your waist. For women I guess it's around the hips.

In order to lose bodyfat you must burn more calories than you consume. Fundamentally, it is as simple as that. Any exercise (including zapping yourself with a Slendertone belt or similar) that burns calories and boosts your metabolism will contribute towards fat loss.

IME, the only way to get any degree of abdominal definition is through a reduced-calorie diet in conjunction with exercise to stimulate one's metabolism.

However, the problem with exercise is that if you find it boring you're not going to keep at it, so if you're enjoying using the Slendertone then stick with it - but be prepared to reduce your calorie intake further if necessary in order to continue to drop weight.

Using it will burn calories......it doesn't really matter whether it burns fat as the source or not......used calories are used calories.

However, the only impact it will have on your abbs is to increase their size and strength. It won't burn fat from your stomach any more than you can empty one end of a swimming pool before the other.
