They're driving me fecking nuts,
some days I can run miles no problem other days I'm nearly dying after just 3-5 minutes of running?
Anyone know what causes them or how to get rid of them?
Jesus!! They are there for a reason!!some days I can run miles no problem other days I'm nearly dying after just 3-5 minutes of running?

What sort of operation did you have? Or was it some form of self inflicted wound that needed stiching.
Did the doc' say it was ok to keep running / training before you have them taken out?
Ooooohhhh riiiight.. STITCHES!! D'oh!!

AFAIK, they are caused by one of your internal organs (liver, potentially, is that on your right hand side?) banging up and down when you run. The ligament (?) holding it in place gets stressed and causes the pain. Can be avoided by not eating or drinking too much before you go out, also by bracing your core when you run.
EDIT.. yeah, I was right. The liver.
Sorry, just have to add, I'm feeling a little weird today and my mental ability has taken a real hit.. :S

It is to do with your diaphragm. Your liver is attatched to your diaphragm by a couple of ligaments so quick, shallow breathing mixed with the movement of your liver will cause a stitch.
If you do get a stitch whilst running try some deep breaths and change your breathing pattern. The best solution is when you first start running, take note of how you are breating and adjust it accordingly - then you shouldn't get a stitch.
Also try not to eat much before running (and give it at least 45 mins before you start).
ETA:
If you are trying to loose weight, don't cut out too much - you still need the energy to run! Also, if you're just starting, don't push yourself too hard. Keep your heart rate in the 'Fat Burning Zone' which isn't when you're at 'full speed'.
