I'm going to book in to see the doc, but I'm just wondering what people think.

I tore the ligament in my knee a few months ago, and when I had my follow up appt for physio, I voiced my concern that my knee was making a 'grinding' noise when I bent it. I was told this was due to my knee being swollen and the kneecap not sitting right.

Well, it still makes that grinding noise, but a month or so ago it started 'popping', like it was coming in and out of place. This now happens regularly. I don't want to do permanent damage to my knee, hence going to see the doc.

Any thoughts? It happens more after I've not moved for a while, especially in the morning.

A chap I work with had the same problem after an accident at football. He left it for 12 months until the pain was unbearable. The popping sensation and grinding may be due to bone on bone contact if the cartilage has been damaged. (I'm no doctor, I'm going on his past experience).

The result was he had to have an operation (costing 3000+ euros) which a lot of football players have also had. They take some tendon issue from another part of your leg, drill a hole in your knee, sometimes insert a plate, and reattach the tendon.

The operation itself was very quick and he didn't feel a thing as they gave him an epidural, then he promptly passed out.

It is the months and months of recovery time which is the arse...

Good luck with it, but I have to say, anything knee related is usually trouble...

Does your knee also lock? Do you have trouble bending it?
I've been having the locking/popping in my knee, and after the L2S on Sunday, I was in agony from my knee, it was gringing too (has been for a while, but only really noticed when sore) saw the doc today, and has said that the cartilage has worn and is now bone on bone.
Am off to the specialist to get it checked.

OP, I'm not saying you have the same, but I would suggest you go to your doc tomorrow and get it looked at, and if at all possible, by a specialist sooner rather than later. You're not going to be wasting their time.

I ruptured my ACL, chipped a bone and destroyed cartilage playing football when I was 16 (about 13 years ago now). Went to a specialist and had an operation to 'repair' it. Bio-mechanically now, it's stronger than it was before. But I had the warning that my knee would be prone to premature arthritis. Last time I ran intensely for exercise or sport was over 2 years ago because of the discomfort I'd feel afterwards. I now do purely very low/non-impact exercise, mainly cycling and swimming.
I too, get the 'grinding' noise when I bend the knee and sometimes it pops when I straighten it.

These days there’s probably a synthetic ‘cartilage-pad’ or something like it that they can put in the knee.

The amount of pain I was in when it happened to me, I'm stunned you're not already booking appointments.

Ah, now the popping or grinding doesn't hurt. It's annoying but no real discomfort. It sometimes pops when I'm not expecting it, which takes me by surprise.

I am concerned about arthritis though. I'm 25.

My other knee has now decided to start playing up. Off to the docs when I get back from holiday!

I woudl be cautious about relying on the docs too much

my GP misdiagnosed a aprtial ACL tear and a full ACL tear (different GP each time).

I also had a physiotherapist misdiagnose the partial ACL tear!

What you need is a decent sports physiotherapist who specialises in knees, they can do some tests to work out what is wrong and the best way forward.

i recently had an ACL reconstruction, which is taking aprt of the hamstring and screwing it into the place of the old ACL. A lot of footy players have it - the recovery is long, its been 4 months for me and I am still unable to run or even walk totally properly.

i am now seeing a different physio than theo en i am getting on the NHS and he is getting me better quicker.
