I've been a smoker for nearly 12 years now. I'm not a particularly heavy smoker (less than 10 a day unless I go out for a few beers). It costs me next to fk all as I buy 200 grams of camel tobacco for 11€ (lasts me 6 weeks +/-)

I've been ill all week in bed with a nasty little viral infection, this has meant that for the last 5 days, I haven't actually touched a smoke.

Previous to this, I haven't really ever seriously considered giving up, it costs me practically nothing to smoke financially and I enjoy it. Especially a decent cigar.

However, I do have a young lad and whilst I don't smoke anywhere near him, he's still clearly breathing it in via my clothes. This makes me feel like a bit of a selfish to be honest.

I'm at a bit of a turning point as I'll probably be over this virus in the next day or two and it'll be a case of either deciding to bin it permanently, or continue merrily smoking away.

What would you do?

I'd get a different pursuit to fill my time and edginess.
A nice hobby that will keep my mind off the giving up the smokes.
Something like heroin.

You can't really decide until you're up and about and seeing other smokers too. I could easily say I'd quit in that position but it's not that easy, and you could do the same thing under the current situation. You could always go and get some 'substitutes' for smoking like nicotine patches etc for when you're better?

Still, £40s worth of baccy for £8 or so seems like a deal to me.

See how it goes. If you get off the smokes, bonus, if you don't...well...no difference.
If you want to give up it makes it all a stack load easier, so if you do...now is as good a time as any.

I'm not sure I actually want to give up. This is the problem.

Then don't try would be my advice. If you fail, you'll possibly only end up thinking "I've tried before, I can't do it" and find it harder to give up next time.

Yeah, it's a bargain. My brother-in-law's folks are truckers so pick up shed loads of the stuff on their travels. Every time we go over to France, I get 4 or 5 tubs. Keeps me in fags all year and for the sum total of about 120€ (not including papers/filters).

Ex-smoker here - give up to be honest. I smoked around 20 a day and although this is double your amount, its worth giving up for the health benefits. I am not some super fit dad who races around with his kids all of the time, but its the little things that make a difference....

Being able to do stuff is great and not worrying about when to have my next ciggie is always great. The long-term health benefits are worth considering too. Oh and yes, you notice the smell when you stop - its actually quite nasty, sorry.

I admit I am a non smoker, and despise the stuff, still, each to their own.

I would say it's a non brainer, if you can give up, and are in two minds do so, especially with a young 'un, you have more to gain than lose.

I am a bit of a secret smoker, well I say secret, most people don't know but I tend to have one in the morning, one at lunch, one after work and occasionally one in the evening. So it's maybe 3 or 4 a day. Hardly worth it some would say?

I can go days without one and not miss it, for example if I spend the weekend with the parents or for some other reason and I can't escape to have one.

I think the issue is I just enjoy it enough to block out the negative health issues, I'm a top standard badminton player and I exercise regularly. Would be interested to see if quitting made any difference to my sport, but I don't think I really want to.

Up until two months ago, I used to smoke around 10 a day maxiumum socially.

Totally kicked the habit, feel really good and food tastes SO much better - so now I am putting on weight.

It's good for variety, now instead of getting the anti-smokers whinging at me, the anti-weight people do it instead... rolleyes

I smoked for many years and gave up three years ago.Used to have the normal amount of coughs, colds, chest infections etc.

Since I gave up all I've had is a runny nose.Still get all the symptoms of a bad cold, but when I wake up it's gone.
