Further on baby wheezing
Discussion
Further to my previous post - we have been using Montelukast granules and atrovent.
However things are getting worse. We have extended periods of fast breathing, indrawing and recession - always seem to get worse int he afternoon. On a couple of occasions I have been close to calling an ambulance
We are now using the inhaler every day and in the last few days severeal times a day every day! We are trying the blue inhaler but I am lead to believe that this will not work as my baby is 8 months old (6 corrected) and he will not have the correct receptors for this one.
It would helpo if I could get the Montelukast down better but he is not able to take any solids - due to strange bowel problems - extreme constipation mucus etc.
Anyway we are off to see the peads in 2 weeks - any ideas for the interim gratefully received!

I know baby is being treated as if asthma (there is a fmaily history on one side of this and ezcema on the other and allergies on both sides).
He does also have severe reflux - medicated and on a hypoallergenic milk.
Having tried clean rooms etc - it is to some degree better when in hospital compared to home - we have a cat who is hairy etc. Pollen does make it worse. But I would say it is there even when these factors are not present - these seem to aggrevate it.
There is a persistant cough at night - nearly every night and this is when he wheeze most. If he gets excited - lots of kicking or playing - it becomes worse. By the end of the day - bathtime - you can see some indrawing under the ribs and he starts to sound like a donkey!
When it is bad it makes it hard for him to feed. The trouble is the reflux also makes breathign worse - if we get a bad reflux episode then that also aggrevates his breathing.
Thanks for reading - at least by writing it down it becomes clearer what is happening and when

The symptoms sound like a combination of allergy and intolerance. Sounds like you are on pepti for the allergy already and a combo of ranitodine and domperidone for the reflux too (or similar)
Mucus in bowels must be intolerance, though if he/she is on pepti, I'm struggling to think of what it might be. Are they on pepti alone? Maybe just a reaction to the meds possibly?
I was told, by a GP, that asthma cant be diagnosed this early and it usually takes a few years for it to become obvious, though I have no idea why. My son (who has allergies) is not athsmatic as such but as soon as he gets any cold/flu it goes straight to his chest and gets very wheezey and full of phlegm, so much so, he invariably vomits at some point as he is too young to develop the concept of gobbing it up. My daughter, who had the reflux is exactly the same.
Do you have hypoallergenic mattress & cover for bed, no feather mattress/pillows/toys etc (feathers breeding ground for dust mites) You say he has hypo milk, what was he confirmed allergic to?
If its any consolation, my daughter just grew out of reflux when she started weaning and its all a bad memory now!
Good luck
Mike

thanks all.
we do have a cat - keeping on eye on whether he is worse in rooms cat goes in.
He is on neocate milk. For reflux - 20mg omperazole and dom peridone, fort bowels movicol and suppositories. No solids - nothing apart from Neocate. All of mine have had reflux - so I feel I am known ground there.
One thing to add with the worst episodes we get chest recession and he looses his colour, grunts and can become quite floppy. Saw the nurse this pm and she said to carry on with ther high dose salbutamol right now.
He's always been a bit prone to things - caught a cold in scbu even> After the 4th bout of broncholitis this winter this all started.
the thing that seems to help is steam and atrovent. As it is getting worse cwe are trying the blue one instead

Sounds a very dificult and alarming time for you all. Do you make sure the cat is kept out of his room, does he get worse going outside, i.e hayfeverish. We have been told to keep sons bedroom window closed, even during the day, from May - August. That has definately helped him.
You didn't say what he was diagnosed as being allergic too, is it just milk?
Wish you all the best, having kids with allergies and intolerances and the side affects (athsma tho anaphalaxis) is not fun.
