What do we reckon?

A complete cure / innoculation for AIDS?

Complete cure or simple pill that cures all cancer?

Genetic conditions (Huntingdons / Downs Syndrome) curable?

Just looking at some of the phenominal progress aided by technology in the past 50 years alone - it is interesting to think what kind of things we will be able to fix in 50 years time.

There will never be a cure for cancer, just better ways of treating it.

Edit: There will also never be a cure for Downs Syndrom either, it is easier to 'fix' in couples that have a high likelyhood of having an affected child by screening embryos before implanting them into the womb.

It'll probably go the other way and people will start getting gorilla arms attached in place of thier own ones and stuff like that.

Off the top of my head....

Growth of replacement human parts - mangled your leg in a harvesting accident? No problems, we'll grown a new one in the lab & correct those bunions too....

Nanotechnology - they're already talking about devloping paint that can automatically repair itself after a scratch.

A third arm that is connected to your body but the hand feels like it is someone else's. Could be useful that! smile

Just sit on your hand for a while, gives the same effect.

So I'm told.

I don't agree at all. There will be ways of curing cancers, whether it's in 50 years or not, we shall see, however a cancer is not unlike any other disease, and each cancer will require perhaps a bespoke therapy but can be curable nonetheless.

Or bionic arms which are delicate/dextrous enough to replace human limbs which are damaged. We are on the way there already IIRC.

I also agree that cancer will be cured/defeated in some way, I hope that they will be able to produce a chemical which actively hunts and kills cancer cells, but does not affect any other cells.

The point I was trying to make was similar to yours. Every cancer is different. Some cancers now have good survival rates and others don't. Pancreatic cancer is still almost a guaranteed death sentence. Hopefully things will improve but there will never be a pill or immunisation that cures/prevents every type. beer

We'll cure cancer and immune system virus', and then realise the population of the earth will double every 24 months and the human race will become unsustainable... probably leading to massive global conflict over food and water thus limiting the population growth.

Or not.

One of the biggest advances which would be exceellent is being able to fix people with spinal injuries and paralysis.

Being able to repair and reconnect nerves at a cellular level to what it was before - that woudl be amazing.

Just trying that now. My work colleagues are looking at me in a funny way. I explain to them that it's all in the name of science though. smile

I think there'd either be a cure for cancer in that such "super" cells will die out naturally rather than replicating or perhaps the chemotherapy will specifically focus on those cells without crippling the rest of the body.

I disagree.

It's always good to keep a species for purposes of amusement.

What, the sitting on your hand part? Or the part where you see if it feels like someone elses?

It depends on whether it works or not. smile
