My partner has this and has had it since feb.

She's only a wee thing and has lost a lot of weight recently (she can eat no solids and pretty much since Feb has been on about 500cals a day). Last week she took a course of Erythomycin (which made a slight difference)and today is starting a 10 day course of Trimethporin(sp?). Now she can't take penicillin, but really the reason for this post is what's next?

If these meds were not to work, typically what would be the next step in the GP's medical armoury?

I really don't like the not knowing so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Why is the GP sure it is not viral ?

What has happened each time you have been to the GP ?

Thanks for the reply - this is getting a bit more serious now.

First time, simple checkup and a 7 day course of Erythomycin. No change. Second visit, much longer examination and followed by a 10 day course of Trimethporin. Now 4 days in and this is proving very hard. She can barely swallow anything - including water. Yesterday she ate approx 300cals and it has been like this for weeks now. Eating a bowl of soup takes over an hour..

Not sure what to do now. back to the docs - or wait for the 10 day course of ab's of Trimethporin to finish? Doc reckons it's a mix of viral and bacterial. She was coughing up a load of green/yellow gunk, which seems to be slowing down but she's not well at all and absolutely exhausted. BMI is dropping the wrong side of healthy, fast.

Is she taking anything else ? Paracetemol, ibuprofen, asprin, salt water gargling etc ?

Mix of bacteria and viral for Pharyngitis ? Lol ?

I don't understand why Antibiotics were re-prescribed. Usually if they are ineffective then they are immediately stopped...

Chances are this is 100% bacterial and you just have to suck it up and get on with it with some ibuprofen etc. Remember she is a woman so things like pain/time etc may exaggerated.

Antifungal meds could be looked at, but I think you need to get back into the Doctors and book an emergency appointment.

Tell them that your (wife ?) is feeling dizzy and weak as she is really struggling to drink fluids etc.

Well, yesterday was pretty st. A&E was most of yesterday and today on a ward having MRI, CT and transfusions. They have absolutely no idea what is wrong with her other than chronic anemia. Talk of tumours, cancer and other delightful things. Sleep beckons.

Funny really how life takes these quirky turns. We've been together for over 23 years and the thought of losing her now seems beyond unbearable. I've been here before with cancer a number of times and it is the fear of the unknown that is the worst thing of all.
