Kangen / Alkaline / Ionized Water
Discussion
Has anyone had any experience of drinking this stuff and does it actually have any health benefits?
Had a pitch from someone that sells these units recently who made some outrageous claims - cures cancer was one of them
Researching the net, there seems to be advocates and cynics in equal measure
The thing that puts me off is they seem to be sold in the same way as Kirby vaccum cleaners.

Personally I'd be sceptical. I heard about a demo of this sort of equipment which made use of electrolysis (2 electrodes in the water, electrical current passed between them) to show the "difference in impurity levels" between tap water and de-ionised.
With the tap water there was fizzing and a rusty-looking preciptate, with the de-ionised there was no activity at all. Most impressive. What the demonstrator didn't explain was: this difference is entirely to be expected. Tap water contains dissolved salts (some of which fur up your kettle over time) so it conducts electricity - which means all sorts of stuff will com eout of solution, some of it material from the electrodes themselves. De-ionised water contains no (or very, very low levels) of dissolved salts, and therefore conducts electricity very, very badly - hence nothing happening when it's subjected to an electrical current.
There's no question that de-ionised water contains fewer impurities; there's also (AFAIK) no evidence that the levels of impurities in properly treated tap water are harmful. As I say, where people are selling things, treat their "scientific" claims with caution.
As for the "alkaline" water thing, I don't understand how it's meant to be beneficial. Your body has different pH levels in different systems; your blood will be very slightly acidic because of dissolved CO2 (indeed, IIRC blood pH is one of the mechanisms by which your brain regulates breathing rate - acidity rise -> faster breathing to elimiinate more CO2). Your stomach will be very acidic, due to gastric juices. I can't see how drinking mildly alkaline water will change that, nor can I see how naturally occurring pH levels are harmful beyond issues like stomach ulcers. That particular claim has the whiff of snake oil about it, to my nose.

A lot of people appear to have been helped by this alkaline diet thing.
