Pain in neck, one-sided
Discussion
About 3 or 4 weeks ago now, I started to get a pain in the left hand of my neck, more of an ache really I suppose, however, it does not seem to be getting any better for sure.
I've had a good feel around, and it does not seem as though its swollen, nor does there seem to be any lumps or anything under there. The pain seems to be between where my adams apple is and where my neck meets my jaw, and I can make it ache simply by lifting my left arm. If I look straight ahead or keep still then I do not notice any pain then, just when I move my neck (mainly to the left) or raise my arm.
Any ideas what it could be?

Dunno but I've woken up the same this morning and its made me right grumpy!I've had a good feel around, and it does not seem as though its swollen, nor does there seem to be any lumps or anything under there. could be god knows how many things. if it's muscular related could well be any of the scalene muscles, some of the -hyoid muscles (e.g. stlyohyoid or omohyoid...depending exactly where you are feeling the pain. lots, and lots, and lots more structures in the neck. chronic pain has very poor specificity (i.e. pain can have a large area for a small focal area of pain generators)
without having a good feel around and some other tests i'm just gonna be the boring sod and say go and see someone. doesn't sound particularly serious if it's just a dull ache, sounds muscular based but could be many other things.
could potentially be infected submandibular glands and/or lymph nodes, but one would assume they would be swollen so from what you've said i doubt that.

Thanks for the replies. Last night I went to the gym and then got a massage of my back / shoulders / neck by a qualified sports therapist, and today the pain is a lot better, not to say it won't come back I suppose but I'm going to see how it goes and maybe try some neck exercises, to be fair she wasn't too sure what it could be either, will keep an eye on it in the next few weeks and if it's still troublesome I'll get it looked at.
[quote=C & J]I started with something like this about 18 months ago, I also couldn't shift it and ended
up seeing my GP.
I had an X-ray done and found that I have fused discs at the top of my spine.
If in your case it persists I suggest you see your GP.

do you know if it was a congenital (at birth) problem (i.e. congenital fused vertebrae), or something like a type of arthritis which caused it? if so, what condition was it? (e.g. ankylosing spondylitis - although you'd also get lower back pain first!)
if it was something like this a massage could ease some pain if the neck musculature was tight because of it, but i don't think it this stage it warrants x-rays. i'd have thought just some soft tissue work/massaging along with manipultive therapy if not contra-indicated should help OP out.

forgot to ask - what's your range of motion like? can you flex/extend the neck as much as normal? what about rotation, or trying to get your ear to touch your shoulder? (without elevating the shoulder )
seems fine.My neck seems a bit better since it was massaged.
I wonder if I should incorporate some neck exercises in my exercise regime?
