I ran the Edinburgh marathon on sunday in the heat and am now left with sunburn, the worst i have ever had.

Worst is when leaving Reading to head up there i baught suncream but didnt apply any as it was raining and foggy when i left thehostal that morning. I thought it would stay like that but i was seriously wrong. The plus points are however that i did finish (although half an hour slower than my target time) and breast cancer care recieved their sponsorship smile

I am now left with a very vivid bright red outline from my running vest, with patches of weeping blisters at the top of my shoulders and top of my chest. As expected these are seriously painfull, and look rather disgusting.

My question is how do i go about healing them quickly?

At the moment i am applying aftersun liberally and taking regular saltwater bath's but they are still sore and weeping, is this the right thing to do?

Does sting to buggery but i can put up with that, i figured it would help them dry out quicker, like i have had to do with the blisters on my feet

Why not try a bath in surgical spirit that hardens skin doesn't it?

I once put some on a blister on my foot and it erm...stung...a little.

I see no reason why sitting in a bath of it with large open sores should give you much more than a little bit of minor discomfort....

yikes

I have been using that along with the after-sun lotion, all it seemed to do was smell dodgy and leave my bedding white

On the plus side of these blisters they are starting to go down quite a bit now although they are weeping an awful lot more. Guess its a sign of healing

injecting iodine or friars balsam into the blister will help it heal up very quickly...

I have done this once or twice on occassion but mainly with foot blisters but im wondering if the same can be done for sunburn blisters...

Does anyone know?

I was about to post exactly the same topic!!

What was your time?

I struggled round in 5.35, about an hour slower than i was hoping although i think that was an unrealistic target. The sun was insane!

It was my first marathon and i managed to get round in just over 5 hours (target was 4 - 41/2) although the breakdown tells everything.

10k - 55mins
half - 2 hours
30k - 3.10
full - 5.10

The sun was a nightmare, didn't think it would be quite that bad. With the weather i didn't think there were anywhere near enough water points, even taking two waters and an energy drink at each i was still dehydrated.

In hindsight i should have applied the sun lotion i baught on the journey up and eaten breakfast that morning. In addition i should have done more training than the two half marathons and 20 odd 10k runs i did but the final year uni exams, asda's 50p a bag haribo offer and work commitments dented that somewhat

The good news on the burn front though, the blisters have gone down in size and number but are weeping still. The general area is starting to peel as well so i guess thats a good sign along with it being an awful lot less painful.

I reckon the mixture of the aloe vera aftersun i got combined with the overnight sudocream is working, even had the last saltwater bath this morning lol

Thanks a lot for everybodies help smile

yer my target was 4.3- 5,

10k was about an hour

half 2.20,

then it went seriously down hill from there.

YOur training sounds exactly the same as mine too!
