In our house there is being 'good' and being 'bad'.

For me, being good, means cereal for breakfast, box of salad for lunch, couple of satsumas, an apple, some carrot sticks during the day and my dinner. No puddings. Dinner has no cheese in.

Being 'bad' means puddings, chocolate, cheese, sweets, crisps, takeaways, cheese, toast, cheese, butter, jam, cakes, etc, etc are all allowed.

I'm a right greedy git and I find it easier to be entirely 'good' and very strict than try and strike a balance with occasional 'bad' stuff.

For the last 10 days I have been 'good' and lost about 4lbs in weight. All good news.

But....it causes slight blockage problems downstairs. Last night's movement was like trying to get a housebrick through the eye of a needle. There is a movement each day, but its bloody hard work!

Anything I can do to ease things along?

Maybe try a bit more fibre in your diet?

Or some prunes, that kind of thing.

Failing that, Picolax.

I've tried prunes in the past, and some liquid stuff called fructolase or glucolase or something, as reccomended by the doc that did the surgery on my 'farmer giles'. I'm keen not to inflame that area!

Your good diet shouldn't make you constipated. Are you drinking enough water? What exactly does your good diet consist of?

I did a low calorie diet (500 calories a day) and only went once a week and it was like a brick. To clear that blockage take a senakot maxi in the evening, a fibregel first thing in the morning, 500g of prunes and a strong coffee.

Don't plan anything else for the rest of the day, that 4lbs will easily double...

Rather than letting the diet cause the problem, then using stuff like fybogel or senna to fix it, it would be better to fix the diet itself. The incorporation of fibre, as suggested, and lots of water, should help. Add some regular prunes?

On a side note, I once scoffed a whole pack of something like these:

Dear god it was powerful. It was like having a particularly strong total bowel clearance. I now have greater sympathy for those taking Picolax prior to colonoscopies! Be warned!

Go for a bran-based breakfast cereal, rather than rice or corn.
A high fibre diet will also help lower bad cholesterol and promote bowel/rectal health.
Bran wasn't my optimal breakfast choice, but I really enjoy it now - and my turds are magnificent specimens.

As well as that, how about getting into the habit of eating more fruit? Not necessarily prunes, but an orange with lunch, or grapefruit with breakfast etc. You could also add some oily fish to your diet. Meat and potatoes don't help.

You could always try a couple of pints of bitter (hand pump, not keg or cans). It's not 'bad', think of it as a herbal infusion smile Had a nurse recommend that to me after an op years ago. Or since you like cheese, try a blue one which is well mature.

So daily diet consists of

Bowl of rice crispies with skimmed milk.
2 satsumas.
2 apples
3 carrots
One box of salad including lettuce, toms, cucumber, olives, celery, water cress, pickled stuff, bit of ham or tuna, blodge of salad cream.
My dinner, typically meat and veg, fish or pasta.

I’ve tried prunes previously with no success.

I’m make the switch to bran.

Not drinking enough water is a problem, some days (should never admit this on PH) I get the train and this means about 11 miles of cycling a day. Those days my piss is far too yellow. I do keep a bottle in the office and usually have squash on hand to make up a drink but not for a couple of weeks. I’ll make more of an effort with that.

Yours grunting and straining.

+1 for water
+1 for real ale

Also, add lentils and pulses and spice. A good vegetarian dhansak always has a certain effect.

this drinking more water thing is utter toss.

I've been drinking 4 pints at work like a religion for the last three weeks, nothing has changed, at all.

What else has been going on in your life, though? Increased cardio? Eating more "solid" food? Stress?

Yep increased cardio, not eating more, just eeating better and at sensible times. I feel no different, I've lost a a bit of weight, but untill I'm regularly down in the 14's I won't count it as my weight has been known to fluctuate a 1 stone in a week.

But the water thing, I don't feel different, I'm going to the toilet too much imo, and it seems a waste of time.
