just went to the doc's to pick up a prescription and they had one of those blood pressure machines that give you a reading.

after a consultation with google its apparently high

so how do you keep it down and normal?

Keep your weight down, get plenty of exercise and, hopefully, it will come down a bit.

Of course if you're already thin and getting plenty of exercise, you may need medication to help lower it and keep it down.

Have they asked you back to monitor it?

don't believe google, i bet it told you 120mmHg/80mmHg (systolic/diastolic pressures) right?

blood pressure increases with age, particularly around 50 or so. so the "norm" for different ages varies, and it also varies from person to person. did you take the blood pressure yourself? how can you be sure it was taken accurately. you may have been slightly stressed from the drive there, or the fact you had an appointment, things on your mind. blood pressure fluctuates greatly during the day. unless you know it was done properly, you were relaxed and had been sat down for 5 mins or so and were calm, the measurement is unlikely to be a "true reading". what was the reading anyway?

edit: and how old are you? i'm assuming your male also...?

Yep thats high if you were relaxed & sitting down. However you really need to get a series of checks done to see if it's a one off or a genuine condition. And yes mine was high but now pop so many pills it's under control!

If it's any consolation when they tried to get a benchmark for mine the worst reading was around 185/120.....eek

Yes, both a bit high. I immediately reacted thinking "That's high!"

Exercise, diet, learn to de-stress.

This is too high, if it stays this way, you should see your doctor.

According to my boss, if you don't have high blood pressure you aren't working hard enough.

also worth noting is the electric devices aren't entirely accurate. you should have it done with a proper sphygmomanometer.

Aren't those electronic ones accurate??? (Obviously, I am referring to ones used in hospital.)

not sure which ones they use there. i was referring to your average buy-over-the-counter ones. while they are usually a good indicator, they are far from gospel. as opposed to using a proper one when you use a steth to hear for the systolic and diastolic pressures.

but then, normal joe bloggs can't do that on themselves, and a dr doing it can have the white coat effect, pushing the blood pressure up potentially. the home kits are best for repeatability for that reason, but the reading isn't as accurate for the given moment the reading is taken.

edit: although, saying this, i've said they are a good indicator, and as the results were really rather high, you can rest assured his blood pressure was high (if that makes sense....even though the figures may not be totally accurate). OP should have his BP taken by a professional when he (the OP...not the prof!) is relaxed and has not had a stressful day.

That's high But had you just walked in and what had you been doing before hand? To get a true reading you should be it sitting and you need to have three readings taken over a 15 minute period, your doctor will probably never do that however. Make an appointment to have your BP taken properly by you GP or one of the nurses there and I bet it will be normal.
