I've got a tooth that's well and truly buggered and causing a lot of pain.

It looks like there could be a wait of a couple of weeks before I can get it taken out - apparently needs an oral surgeon rather than the dentist doing it.

So two options - wait it out and get it done on the NHS, or pay to go private.

I'm taking quite a lot of Nurofen Plus to ease the pain - probably 8 or so per day. They do the job of masking it, but is there anything wrong with taking this many for the next couple of weeks?

Sticks.

Sympathise with you, awful, toothache.

Any NSAID (non steroidal anti inlfammatory drug) like Nurofen/Ibuprofen can be harsh on the stomach. Ibuprofen is available in variable doses. Don't know aboue prolonged use, but worth discussing with a pharmacist, who may know more about drugs than your GP. Btw I think the 'Plus' part is caffeine, which might keep you awake.

Might be worth phoning other dentists if you haven't already. Hope it's soon sorted.

Yeah, can cause stomach ulcers. If it's an abscess then antibiotics can help but they're not a long-term solution. See dentist or doctor re prescription.

as said by others - Nurafen etc is not a long term painkiller - go to dentist or quack and get some more appropriate painkillers to use until your jaw cracker appoointment comes up!

Yes make sure you don't have them on an empty stomach. I know a girl that had to have part of her stomach removed, though that was more down to ongoing abuse of them.

The '+' means Codeine not caffeine.

I actually found out that here in Aus after 1st May they will be 'controlled'.

Which tooth is it?

Does the tooth hurt with cold drinks or does cold help the pain? If the tooth is completely dead and infected a course of (the right) antibiotics may well tide you over until you can get it taken out.

Could you not get a quick appointment just for someone to make a diagnosis and prescription?

Went to see a dentist on Monday, who said it is completely dead and needs to be taken out. He also gave me Metronidazole to take to help with the infection, but said to keep up the pain relief in conjunction with it.

It hurts pretty much all the time, it doesn't vary with hot/cold things. It is definitely infected because the middle of the tooth is basically like jelly - an old filling came out a while back and I stupidly did nothing about it... boxedin

Are you doubling up ibuprofen with paracetamol if the pain is real trouble?

For instance you can take ibuprofen at 06:00 then paracetamol at 08:00, then ibuprofen at 10:00 and so on.

Always read the label and consult the pharmacist to check what you plan is safe with the pills you have selected. But it can offer more relief from pain as your taking something every 2 rather than 4 hours.

I keep reading people recommend cloves(?) for toothache which may help. Could also rub the infected area with salt. Or gargle with saline solution. Might help.

They contain Codeine which is an opiate, continue taking this many and you might find yourself becoming a bit rattly.

If it was infected Metronidazole is what you'd want. If you've taken it since Monday then that should have sorted the infection by now. You may have a cyst under the tooth under pressure which is causing the continued pain, in which case you won't be fully comfortable until the tooth is out.

Try not to take more than the recommended dose of painkillers though.

Try the warm salt water mouth washes.

Paracetamol -if you can take it- inbetween the brufen - don't exceed the dose of either

Watch out for constipation with the codeine- pharmacist should be able to advise preparations to help.

GP would be able to advise re dose of codeine if you are only ona small dose

Really you need to see Doctor if this is expected to continue for a while - if its that bad it sounds like you need attention sooner- in my uneducated opinion

Mouthwashes aren't going to do a thing for an infection coming from a tooth, they're not going to reach the area in question between the root and jawbone. Also anything warm/hot can actually cause pain due to expansion from the heat. Often cold helps as long as there is no nerve left alive which I believe is the case here.

Absolutely right about him needing attention asap though.

Pain has subsided today, thank god, so I'm off the Nurofen.

Question on the antibiotics - the last ones will be taken early tomorrow morning. They say not to mix with alcohol, but should I be OK by Sunday lunchtime to have a pint or two without killing myself?

just about ok, but if you start hurl then you'll know the reason Metronidazole doesn't mix with alcohol

I often prescribe Metronidzole and never say anything about the alcohol thing and nobody ever complains. Then again people don't go on the piss quite so much over here hehe

Considering you can buy boxes of 72 at a time, more than enought to do long term damage, i'm not suprised.

Metronidazole + DF118 + Omeprazole + Clarithromycin + Alcohol = a bloody bad idea wink
