Recently started getting some pretty bad lower leg pains whilst running. Today I managed only 5 miles through shear determination with every step really feeling painful. It feels like a pain in the bone about 3 inch's above the lumpy bit on the ankle on the inside of my leg, about 45 degrees round. Been getting it on both but worse on the left leg. Really sore to touch too and painful to walk on afterwards.

Am usually comfortable doing much further runs upto 15 miles, and todays wasn't even a quick pace.

Seriously hoping it isn't a stress fracture, supposed to be doing a marathon in 4 weeks.

Any suggestions?

Does it feel like the bone is bruised?

I've got the exact same thing and in the exact same position as you described, (inside left leg not even half way up my shin), through doing a bit of running recently.

I thought i had banged my leg against something but like you say, it gets worse the more running i do!

Sorry i cant help but i'd be interested in hearing replies to this thread so i can find out whats going on as well.

Yer i guess it does feel like a bruise. But I havent knocked it and its been coming and going a fair bit with running but never this severe. And both legs too.

odd that it's both legs. i would get it seen too. preferrably for you not by a GP who will say rest it for a few weeks then come back. i say this because, being a runner myself, i know you don't want to take that long off running unless you know you have too.

Go and see someone who knows about sports injuries - preferably a Podiatrist or a Physio.

Probably need a biomechanical assessment to see what is being strained and why.

In the meantime stop doing the thing that makes it hurt! And get some ice on it.

scratchchinGo get it looked at, pronto, but bear in mind it can take a few weeks before a stress fracture can be seen on xray.

In the meantime: How long ago did it start? What's it like at night? How old are your shoes?

Sounds pretty much exactly like shin splints that I suffer from or MTSS to be more exact.

The problem is finding out what causes it, could be so many things, mine are caused by weak and tight hips.

Sounds unlikley to be a stress fracture as they are 'usually' caused by having the symptoms are describing for along time beforehand and running through them.

Go to a decent sports physio and get it checked - not a podiatrist imo. The pain is a side effect of something else higher up the chain.

I have lived and trained with constant lower leg/ankle/shin pain and it is not easy to get rid of I am afraid.
