Is it worth going to the GP?

I had an injury many years ago. Spent several months in 2009 on prescription co-codemol and then fentanyl for a possibly related structural problem. It has mostly resolved not 100%. BUt now I have developed bad back pain again and to be honest the only thing that is touching it so I can sleep is the strong co-codamol. I suspect this might be to do with the amount I took about 6 months ago.

Ibuprofen has zero effect.

Would an osteopath be a better bet?

Painkillers will only mask the pain, you want to find out what the issue is, and if possible fix or make it better so its less of an issue.

Hope you sort it though.

GP won't do much aside fromgive you painkillers and refer you to a physio/Osteo.

I get physio through Occupational Health at work. It helped a bit but in the end it was just rest that fixed it.

Get yourself to an Oesto. Get reccomendations.

I had a car crash in 1989 (not my fault), of course ended up with a bad back the pain subsided but every few years a recurring dull ache starts which then leads to being crippled in pain, having to roll over to the edge of the bed, drop to the floor and then use the wall just to stand up, Doctors to be honest just could not help, in the end went to see a Chiropractor and it was and still is the best thing I could have done, of course it doesn't work for everybody.

drugs will make it easier but not fix the problems ... find a good sports physiotherapist local to you and use them regularly.

I had an accident 13 years ago where I fractured my upper back in 2 places and (like XJS John) also have 3 crushed vertebrae. My upper back is in constant pain, ranging from a dull ache to absolute agony, it hurts to stand still for long periods of time (crowded train journies being a prime example) and often the only short term way to alleviate the pain is to bend down and feel every vertebrae crack and release some of the tension.
The muscles around that area are also one huge knot and an osteopath does help but is by no means a cure. I need to stretch regularly and try to loosen the area up as much as possible - though a desk job really doesn't help this.
Get yourself to an osteo in the first place in order to determine exactly what is causing the pain as in my case its a combination of muscle knots/tension which can be helped and crushed verts which can't.
