I'll never, ever visit a Gym but............
Discussion
I last went to a gym when I was 11 years old and that's fine by me. All that sweaty endeavour never appealled, in shorts, vests and black plimsolls.
This year I'm going to turn 44 and that age old problem is raiseing it's ugly head.
THE BEER GUT.
I've always been pretty skinny, led an active life, kept fit through work but now I'm stuck behind a desk for the first time in my life. I eat well at home but at work its a lot of supermarket crud for lunch. I still cycle about 8 miles everyday as a commute but on the downside I smoke 20 a day and like a pint or a glass of vino after work.
I have a dickie back, so lifting weights is a no-no. Typical biker accidents of broken leg and collarbone also are a bit of a drawback to certain exercises.
I don't want to 'get fit' or 'live longer'. All I want to do is to reduce the belly a bit.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Unles what your eating is total junk - and the evening pint or glass of wine is maybe a couple or three pints and maybe a half bottle of wine I can't see where your going wrong.
8 miles a day on the bike is a decent amouint of excercise.
I'd try changing your lunch, and looking at how much you drink each evening?

If you have the motivation get a decently priced (so quiet) exercise bike- just do it whilst watching TV etc. 30 min program = 30 min excercise. This year I'm going to turn 44 and that age old problem is raiseing it's ugly head.

Thanks guys, but what the heck do I do about the belly bit?
Not after a six-pack, just want to wear my jeans.
You can't lose weight from a particular part of the body, your body decides. All you can do diet and train and it will go. If you lucky it may be the first place, if not the last! Not after a six-pack, just want to wear my jeans.
I was in a similar position a couple of months back. Started using the exercise bike for 30 mins a day, after work. Have also been doing 5 sets of press ups now at 100 and 5 sets of sit ups, also now at 100, every day. Got a power bar for some pull ups (christ thats hard).
Started at 87kgs now at 74kgs after about 8 weeks, cut out bread and potato from my diet plus fizzy pop, dont drink much smoke far too much and have noticed a vast improvement in my body shape. Still eat a bit of crap now and again but now ive started the exercise and can see the results I'm keen to continue. Still got a bit of fat to shift from the belly.

I can see where you're coming from but I do 1/2 an hour cycling to work and the same again home, often into 25/35mph headwinds along the coastroad, day in/day out.
My jeans size has jumped from 28" inch to 34" in 5 years but the 36" falls off my bum with a bit of belly matching the belt buckle.
Is it just getting old?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's called a beer belly for a reason...
Other sneaky calories that catch me out are fizzy drinks and fresh fruit juices. For me, my problem is portion control, but to be fair I usually bulk up in the winter and slim down in the summer. I don't fancy big stodgy meals in the summer, and cycle more.
As someone suggested, start taking the (longer) sceneic route home!

I'm on the same boat, the beer gut boat.
I eat generally good food apart from the odd pizza or take away once a fortnight. Usually its Chinese noodles or roasted veg. But I'm trying to cut the alcohol, which is going to be tough through the summer! I've been told wine is slightly better for you, so I'm trying to move over to that. I'm also going to have 1 night during the week for a few drinks (pub quiz; I'm limiting myself to quantity on that night too), then 1 night at the weekend, the other being reserved for going out to the cinema etc.
A drink seems pointless to me, and I hate that. I drink to get tipsy/drunk, rather than to enjoy a cold one on a summers afternoon. But again, think of ways to prevent this, drive to a pub, so you know to have a pint as a maximum or a soft drink. (I had a pub lunch on Sat and my second drink was a coke, this was walking home too). Even at home, I'd rather have none than one, once I've had one, I want 3 more, even if I have to go and get it from the shop.
I also cycle 3 times a week at least 7 or 8 miles (I'm trying to vary it so its not boring). I also walk to work and back, including going home at lunch.
My problem is, a few drinks is the aid to boredom. I don't have many hobbies and all my mates want to do is sit in the pub. I find if I'm busy, I'm fine. So, a bike ride after work, cleaning the garage and a late dinner, I'm ready for bed before alcohol has crossed my mind.
Might not help, but its my thoughts.

lose the super market crud. cut down on calories through the day. 8 miles a day cycling should be enough. contrary to belief sit ups won't really get rid of stomach fat, so it doesn't matter too much you can't do them anyway.
thing is, anyone could say the following: eat a better diet with less fat (particularly saturated and trans-fats), decrease caloric intake, your exercise is ok, cut down on the smokes and alcohol.
note i said cut down, ideally you should quit smoking, but that's a choice you make, and it's rightly your own choice. don't drink too much of the good stuff, but do enjoy yourself. what's the point in losing weight when you don't enjoy it.
