does anyone know a good high ends gym in the hampshire area? Ideally near farnham/farnborough...

I'd like it to have a spa area for post workout monging, a pool because i swim a lot and some decent weights/cardio machines and lots of free weights. squash courts as well would be good.

I'm currently a member of nuffield gym farnham but i think £72 just doesn't align with the standard of the gym - it's a little small and the machines are always in use...

i've been a member of virgin active in farnborough before and i'm considering going back. fitness first or whatever in fleet shopping center doesn't interest me.

oh and if little munchkin kids were banned that would be a great bonus.

Have you thought of Pennyhill Park?

It's got pretty much everything, you want from a gym/spa. With an exclusive membership limited to 500, joining fee of £2000 and membership of £2800 a year fees.

Is that high end enough for you?

Are you working out so that you can muscle your new bike around Brands?

not really - i don't think i'm good enough to get physically tired from riding at the moment. will be a while before i'm throwing the bike about and moving all over it...

new gym is because i think this one is a bit of a rip off. wouldn't mind paying the same or a bit more for somewhere really nice. doesn't seem like there's much out there.

maybe i should just man up and join a manly 'rocky balboa' type gym. but they smell a bit and there's never eye candy so then again maybe not..

The 4 Seasons Hotel in Hampshire has a nice pool and spa. Might be worth a look, but won't be cheap. (We went on a work thing, and as it was the weekend we skipped the gym and hit the pool!)

save yourself some money in the long run and do some sport outside! i understand why people like gyms, but i can't stand them. much rather get some of the good outdoors without having to see prats in tight tank tops staring at themselves in the mirror for hours on end.

I don't understand why people run.
It's slow, boring and tedious.

Would much rather be in a gym full of Lycra clad totty.
It was jam packed with them this morning and that was at 6.30

but each to their own wink
go to an athletics club wink plenty of totty, and not stuck in a smelly room waiting for machines.

running is slow, maybe for you, but gyms are stationary? i didn't say running....what's wrong with cycling too? you can get weights at home too if you want to use weights.

Well probably do 120 miles this week on the bike

But I do like doing my weights first thing in the morning surrounded by scantily clad totty

And running long distance is slow for anyone. Unless you're going to tell me you're running at 15mph wink
if you think paying £x per month just to do weights in a sweaty room with totty is worth it...go ahead biggrin

i wish i could run that fast, i'm an 800m runner by trade, but on a 10 mile run i can usually do in about 65 mins on a relatively flat course. though i don't see how speed has anything to do with it, because you enjoy weights which is done stationary? confused

each to their own i guess. but i always got the impression gyms are generally (note, generally) for those who don't enjoy playing sports. and before you say about running, i also play football, do mountain biking (proper mountain biking smile ), martial arts and badminton smile

doh i've just named 2 sports which are indoor sports hehe

The speed but relates to the changing scenery.
I'm doing an 85 miler on Sunday and will cover most of the new forest.
To cover that much ground on foot would take me weeks smile

Most sportsmen use gyms to build strength so it plays a big part in training.
In fact all the marathon runners I know spend plenty of time in the gym
you seem to think i hate cycling....i love it! i didn't even mention running in my first post...i just said outdoor sports confused

i know plenty of sportsmen use gyms for strength, but a lot more (hence, generally), don't play or enjoy other sports.

anyway, this is way too off topic for the OP!

well i do play several sports (outside) and i always try to get all my cardio from them as i agree that cardio machines in the gym are boring.

the reasons for a gym:

- various resistance machines / free weights available. if i had a large spare room i could buy my own free weights and bench and would be happy to do that but i don't. doing weights in a smallish room feels stuffy and there's poor ventilation. plus i just rent a place so i don't want to amass a load of weights/machines/kit..
- as mentioned in the original thread i like to swim a lot so a gym with pool is ideal (council pool is a no no).
- also as previously mentioned there's the totty. no smack not old housewives... (ok maybe if times are lean).
- spa. i know it sounds lame but they're great for relaxing after a workout.

cheers for the advice though

ps the gym vs natural exercise debate reminded me very much of the training montage from rocky 4!

£40 a month to go to a gym is a pittance for the amount of equipment on offer.

A full set of dumbells is well over £1000, let alone all the other bits on offer at my place.
