its a myth that a hard bed is better for backs - it needs to be soft enough that you sink in so the spine is straight. buying beds is a nightmare - try tempur if you are rich and dont mind warm beds or places like feather and blacks do diff softness per side of mattress

ps pilates is fab for backs

i generally reckon if the beds comfy, it's fine. i don't know of any (not saying there isn't) hard evidence showing about back pain between harder vs softer new mattresses.

do you remember anything that triggered the onset of the muscular pain? it's unlikely to be the mattress (or certainly that alone) because 1 - you've had it 5 years, so why would it suddenly start causing you pain, and 2 - the mrs may have some discomfort too if the mattress is the culprit. depending on how you sleep i suppose.

The first time my back went was after a gaem of golf. All the muscles in my upper back sized for a couple of days, I have since reduced the frequency I play golf however the problem has never occured since after a round, now I only seem to get the discomfort after sleeping.
do you swing from left to right, or right to left? probably just damaged mid-lower traps and/or rhomboids. how long you been having the pain? you said then that all the muscles seized in your upper back, but after sleeping it's just the upper left. do you mean all muscles both sides of the upper part of you back, or lower back as well? if upper, a few days later did it just calm down to leave you with pain on just that left side? do you play golf in the evenings? if you ever play in the mornings, do you never get discomfort come late afternoon/evening time?

unlikely to be anything to get too worried about, if you keep getting the pain for more than 2-3 weeks you might want to think about seeing someone. just sounds like you have damaged some muscle fibres is all.

cheers
