its a myth that a hard bed is better for backs - it needs to be soft enough that you sink in so the spine is straight. buying beds is a nightmare - try tempur if you are rich and dont mind warm beds or places like feather and blacks do diff softness per side of mattress
ps pilates is fab for backs

i generally reckon if the beds comfy, it's fine. i don't know of any (not saying there isn't) hard evidence showing about back pain between harder vs softer new mattresses. ps pilates is fab for backs
do you remember anything that triggered the onset of the muscular pain? it's unlikely to be the mattress (or certainly that alone) because 1 - you've had it 5 years, so why would it suddenly start causing you pain, and 2 - the mrs may have some discomfort too if the mattress is the culprit. depending on how you sleep i suppose.

unlikely to be anything to get too worried about, if you keep getting the pain for more than 2-3 weeks you might want to think about seeing someone. just sounds like you have damaged some muscle fibres is all.
cheers
