A new or nearly new Concept 2 is out of my budget but I have seen some reconditioned Tunturi R25 and R30 rowing machines at a decent price ( 300-£400). The other option is one of the chaper machines like the V-Fit AR1 Artemis 2 Air £209), see how it goes before spunking a larger amount.

It will be in the unheated garage (unless the OH relents) on a concete floor so will I need a proper mat too?

Mate, I would keep your eyes peeled for a 2nd hand concept 2 if you are going to be training seriously on it.

The second hand Concepts seem to be all fetching around £500, and soem of the chaeper ones look like they may have had a hard life (the one at the Oldham fire station on Fleabay for example I bet has been given a real bashing).

If I could get one with just home use under £400 that might be OK but I can get a recon version of one of the competitors with 2 years of warranty at £299. I can hire at £40 a month and then if I decide to buy they deduct what I have paid from the price.

If you ring CV Fitness up in Notts they have some second hand ones also do servicing, they are designed to have a hard life and to be honest the guys and girls in Fire Service are not phys mad in general. To add most people do not do over 5k so they are pretty worthy of a good life span in the gym.....
