My wife had a fall from her road bike last July (July 2009). Fortunately no serious injury, but she did hurt her Coccyx (tailbone).

She was in quite serious pain for some time and went to see the GP who told her that it would take some months for the pain to subside.

Its now been almost one year and she still experiences some discomfort from the tailbone, especially when sitting for any length of time.

How long should this type of injury take to subside?

I suppose it depends on how old she is. When I was about 20 I fell off a horse and had 3 crushed vertebrae in the coccyx region. It was very painful when it happenned and gradually less so over the next 6 weeks. Probably had twinges for the next year, but otherwise OK.

I fell down the stairs a little worse for drink at the time I must admit and damaged my Coccyx. As a result I had to sell my Harley because I couldn't sit on it for more than 10 minutes without discomfort. Even now (2 years later) sitting on an aircraft seat is uncomfortable but it is slowly getting better, still can't ride a bike tho.

A friend broke her coccyx falling off a horse.

After several 'manipulations' (guess how this is done) she eventually had the broken bit taken out.

Pester the docs for removal if this is an option.
