hey everyone, i have a problem
every morning when i get up i really need to go to the toilet. i havent had a solid poo for weeks now and fairly concerned.

i don't have a poor diet and eat alot of pasta, red meats, salad and bannanas.
i've also started to drink these probiotic yoghurts to see if that helps but nothing is frown

can anyone help, or have any ideas why?

1) any abdominal pain?
2) any blood in the stool (red or off-red)?
3) stressed?
4) drink a lot of milk?
5) eat a lot of bread and other wheat products?

1, 2, 3 may indicate problems like IBS, Crohn's, ulcers. 4, 5 was asked because you may have developed an intolerance. Get to the GP; if you had a tummy bug, it shouldn't last more than a couple of days.

Well, you could try cutting milk and wheat out of your diet for a week and see how it goes BUT you've had it for so long, I'd really be looking to see a doctor.

Do you drink coffee before you need the loo or is it immediately you get up?

Can't be that powerful can it? Hm, on a similar note, does your partner have a sense of humour and have you noticed your Optrex bottle going down quicker than it should?

Oh yes, I've had to stop drinking decaffeinated it's so bad and talking to other people it seems to be quite a common problem. I've also had to stop having a cup of coffee before leaving for work as on occasions I haven't made it in in time. yuck

Something in coffee (and sometimes chocolate, but never tea) has a direct stimulant effect. It does in me - really obvious. Not quite as powerful as the previous poster who couldn't hold on, but the effect is definitely there! smile

Annoyingly, it doesn't help me stay awake whatsoever!

No sugar or milk, other things have a similar effect such as a fried brekkie. I've found that the yakult type drinks help plus I'm now taking omeprazole which also helps. I just noticed the bit about my partner having a sense of humour, she needs to with some of the pants I've brought home at times. As a joke I once left a pair on her pillow, the room can be a bit dark as she only opens one side of the curtains in the morning, when she came home she came down the stairs screaming at me saying she thought it was the cat and had started stroking them. hehe

I wonder if you can develop an intolerance to coffee. Do you have a lot of coffee?

I used to drink loads, up to 20 cups a day, but have cut back a fair amount now. As someone else says there's something in coffee (and more so in Caffeine) that has a stimulant affect.

Do you drink a lot of beer at night? This can cause loose stool, can't it?

20 cups!!! I wonder if you've developed an intolerance through over-consumption.

Caffeine has a diuretic effect - it leaches water from the faecal matter in the bowel and you end up pissing it out, leaving you dehydrated and constipated, IIRC.

I had the problem long before I started drinking too much coffee, I used to drink loads of tea but switched to solely coffee after I started taking it black, after that I found tea didn't taste of anything. I also now only have decaffeinated.

You could have caught some kind of intestinal parasite. Get to the doctor and pick up a sample container.

"Normal" tea contains caffeine, too. biggrin

But you still get the runs with decaf? You SURE nobody's putting Optrex in your coffee?
