Hi

Id appreciate some help
Eldest son bashed himself in the face last year
Upshot is he knocked his front teeth and one of them is now infected with an abscess

Seen by dentist today - very helpful and gentle smile
Root canal drilled out and temporary root filling stuff placed

Needs to return for repeat dressing and definitive treatment when ready

Dentist said normal practice is calcium something however there is some new stuff whos name I cant remember exactly (sorry) but is three letters one of which may be an M
Apologies this is poor intel....

Dentist has been treating family for years and we have no concerns with them per se just wished to canvass opinions, or even work out what the new stuff is so I can Google it

We asked him what he would do for his own 10 year old and said probably the new stuff by someone who has been doing it for a couple of years
Our issue is we like our dentsist who would use the new stuff if asked however has never done so before

Is it rocket science or merely a different compound to squirt up the tooth?
And consequently would someone who is a competent endo person but has never used it be a good person to do so?
Or would you go to the specialist who may not be as gentle with a child?

Many thanks

New stuff is MTA, seems to be a fantastic material. I'd stick to the existing bod if your son is comfortable with him.

The old fashioned way to do it is to use someCalcium Hydroxide and wait for a few months. Still works, but MTA is pretty well instant.

MTA is very good stuff, but can be quite difficult to place well in the tooth. It's very technique sensitive and can take a while to get well practiced at placing it.

+1 may be worth considering a specialist referral

MTA placement is an irreversible procedure (once set) and therefore HAS to be placed correctly first time, using the correct equipment. Takes experience i'm afraid

Specialists treat children in this situation all the time.
