Since Sunday morning I've had a pain in my right knee. Almost as if I've twisted it but I can't think of anything that I've done that would twist it. I've also noticed this afternoon that I seem to have some swelling of the muscle on the back of my leg, behind my kneecap (Plantaris? Not sure). It's got worse over the course of the day today but I've not been moving or anything so it might have just stiffened up. I haven't really done anything with my legs since I played football on Tuesday (other than walking and driving) and it's been fine since then. Like I say, it feels like I've twisted it - the pain feels almost like it's inside my knee.

Does anyone have any clues as to what it might be or how I could treat it? I can't find anything with a quick Google search so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

i'm going to doubt plantaris since it actually acts on the ankle, believe it or not, however, it is independant on knee position. so i'd say if you've had no ankle problems associated with it too, it's unlikely to be plantaris. it could be another muscle called popliteus which helps unlock the knee when you flex it (by rotating the femur slightly)

if there is swelling, just the usual you can try anti-inflammatory drugs and so forth, ice if you want to. monitor how is goes and if it gets worse or still quite uncomfortable after a few days go and see someone. if it's a slight muscle pull or tear it will start feeling better in a few days, although will take a lot longer to actually recover. try to keep using your knee unless it actually causes some pain, you don't want it to atrophy/waste (if it is muscle related). hopefully it's just something like that, and no damage to either you posterior cruciate ligament or posterior menisco-femoral ligament, or even at tear of a meniscus. unlikely those are damaged without any real trauma though. (although the same could arguably be held true for the muscle)
