Hello all,

Our little girl (5 weeks old) has got a bit of a cold and we can hear it's bothering her to breathe of feed properly sometimes.

We have tried to pump the stuff out, used some saline spray but do you know any more efficient method to help her breathe better?

It's got a bit bad this morning as very little blood - probably due to irritation - came out (we are talking very small amount here, and dried up immediately)

Thanks for your help.

One of the best things to help is putting the cot at an angle, even something as simple as standing the top legs on books to raise the side her head lies.

Helps a load and helps keep the nose clearer and lets them get some sleep a bit easier.

Edit: probably still in moses basket as opposed to cot, but same principle applies.

Karvol (sp.?) drops on the sheet, humid atmosphere, don't worry too much.

Vicks vapour rub, karvol as mentioned above is good.

Forget the saline thing, it is pretty much waste of time.

If it keeps happening, it may be worth speaking to the GP about her adenoids. Once a very poular operation for kids it has almost disappeared from the NHS. But can make a big improvement for some children.

as said raising the cot head, saline nose drops. beyond that if she continues not to feed well check the fontanelle is not sunken - if it is off to doctor.

had this done myself, although i was a fair bit older, about 10 or so. and it did make a massive improvement i must say. Not so sure if they will be keen to do it these days (same with appendix for example), the adenoids are lymph tissue, so come in handy when it comes to nasty infection time.

but, speak to GP if needed, it's what you pay your taxes for.

She feeds well actually but struggles sometimes and get all angry. The feed just take a bit longer.

Out of interest, what would a sunken fontanelle mean?

Thanks for the replies so far.

we have a couple of these http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Electric-Vaporiser_5...
helps quite a bit, as others have said, Vicks, and pillow under mattress. I wouldn't fancy messing around with the babies nose too much as they are pretty fragile at that age

the fontanelle is the soft patch onm top of babies head - well that is the easiest one to find on mine. When it sinks down it can be sign of dehydration.

As above. Vicks is great. Dissolve a spoonful in a pan of hot water and let baby gently breathe in the fumes.

you can get plug ins hich give off vicks/carvol vapours, these work well.

Also at bath time, do the snot sucker thing as we can get loads out of our son but this is the only time it works well (maybe from the moisture in the air from the bath?)

The cot raising thing wiorks but we found he rolled down to one end- perhaps we had the bed up too high???

Exactly the opposite, surprisingly enough.

My freinds newborn has had trouble with blocked nose, they put a dehumidifier in there, he slept through the night and woke up in the morning, covered in snot, but no bloked nose.

It's a championed solution apparently.
