I've have stomach pains for a few weeks, just thought it was belly ache, but in the last few days it got worse.
I've tried Gaviscon, cocodomaol, Renneis, fizzy drinks, etc. not really sure if any of them has worked or it's just me thinking they help!

It got bad enough for me to ring NHS direct - very nice lady reckons it is a stomach ulcer but she "can't diagnose", she offered some advice but I'd like more from the good guys & gals on here.
Advice from her was eat little and often, drink milk and see your doc.
First two are OK but I don't do docs!

Other info just in case anyone is interested - no constipation, I feel like I've got a temperature when the pain is bad, my gut feeling (sorry about the bad pun!) is that I have got wind and need to err....get rid of it!

Looking on the 'net I find that stomach ulcers are not due to stress but a bug that can be treated with antibiotics but there seems to be some questions about this.

So over to you and thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, it was a recent discovery that stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria and can be treated with antibiotics. But, you'll need a proper diagnosis first, and then a prescription.

Get thee to the Quack, either way.

Does Gaviscon work? Where is the pain? Is it in a specific place or in your chest generally? If you can't point your finger at where it hurts then do yourself a favour and go to your A&E dept to get checked out.

And I don't do docs either cos I'm in the business myself. But, sometimes you gotta go and this is one of those times. There are lots of causes and the chances of having something proper nasty is very small. Get to the GP at the very minimum - you know it makes sense.

Reflux is where the stomach acid makes its way past the oesophageal sphincter, i.e. the ring of muscle between your stomach and oesophagus that is designed to keep your stomach contents in your stomach.

Is the pain actually in your stomach or just above it?

Reflux is generally at the top of the stomach and above the stomach, and when particularly bad can be felt right at the top of your throat as the acid tries to make an appearance. I've had it for years, usually rears its head when I'm stressed.

Get to the docs and get yourself checked out. If its reflux its manageable with antacids and/or acid inhibitors. If its an ulcer you really want it checked out properly

good advice on here! A trip to the docs sounds like a very sensible option. Let us know how you get on

Afraid this won't get better without a trip to the docs. Man up and get it sorted wink

If you have an ulcer or reflux or hiatus hernia that list is about the worse things you can take for it, especially the cocodamol and fizzy drinks, also coffee and tea are bad as well. Go to the docs asap and get it diagnosed properly.

I've had a duodenal ulcer quite a few years ago. I was like you didn't go to the docs until it started to get really excruciatingly painfull. I went to my GP who booked an appointment to go to hospital for a barium meal x-ray which confirmed the ulcer. Then had a course of tablets to take which dissolve the ulcer.
So no more unpleasant than that so get to the docs.

it's true. it's called helicobacter pylori. (those pathology lessons did come in handy for something hehe ) thing is though, most people have helicobacter pylori already, it's when their immune system becomes supressed (e.g. stress) that it's able to 'take hold'.

i'm not a 'go and see the gp person either....it's been about 5 years (i'm only 21) but in this case, go. chances are he'll just give you some anti-biotics and hopefully problem solved.

GO!

Well, thanks everyone for the replies.
But it would have been nice if you would have read the bit where I said I don't do doctors moanlaugh

To answer a few questions:
Joe - the pain is just below my rib cage and not in one place - don't worry if I was 'that' worried I'd get down to A&E.
Marf - thanks for the description of reflux, I can rule that out now.
TVR wife - I don't do sensible and please stop sounding like my wife wink
Blair - bit more involved than 'man up' - but thanks anyway.
Jag - OK so you told me what is bad but what is good? Not sure that milk is helping, maybe it would with something in it - vodka and milk sound yuckwink
gjf, ross and anyone else I've missed - thanks for the info, but not the advice! wink

So bottom line is you lot think I really 'should' go to the the docs.
If, and at the moment it's still if, I do go the docs - if he tells me I'd going to die a horrible, slow and very painful death - I'll blame you, OK tongue out

Most of us don't do doctors when we are younger but as you get older you'll find you don't have a lot of choice, I've made more visits to the doctors in the last 2 years than I did in the previous 51.
My symptoms are anything from mild chest discomfort (slight burning sensation) to severe indigestion pains below my diaphragm, I have had the acid food regurgitating thing for as long as I can remember. The only thing that really helps with the chest discomfort and stomach pains is Omeprozole plus watching my diet. Last night I had two tins of beer and it started to flare up so it's a case of avoiding the things that cause the problems.
You need to go to the doctor to rule other things out and to get the correct medication if you need it.

I knew someone would be happy to give me all the gruesome details of 'whatever' is wrong with me. frown

I didn't ask because I don't want to know - that way I can die happy in my ignorance laugh
Anyway I'm going to bed now, because I'm not in any pain, if I wake up in the night I may have a look at this thread - but I may not!

"I don't do docs" ... seriously, don't be a <insert personal favourite here>. If you are ill, go see a doctor.

Just make sure you have a will in place, it makes things easier for any loved ones you leave behind.
