The Gf has just found out she's pregnant,
Went to the DR's today & she's been told she'll receive an 11 week home visit, then a 12week scan @ the hospital then won't receive another one until the baby's due Novemberish.
With her other 2 kids she had a scan @ 3 months, then again @ 6 months & she said they also checked for disability & abnormalities etc.
She's a bit concerned as it does'nt seem whether they'll be checking or not for disabilitys etc.

Can anyone one DR / Mid-Wife / Nurse / Curren pregnant family on here shed anymore light on it as i'm absolutely clueless.

12 weeks scan and 20 week scan in most places, but I think it does vary from place to place.

If she wants more scans doing and can't convince her doctor then it's quite cheap to get them done privately anyway.

I know squat about this really, I did have a hand in some NHS radiology software a while back though and I seem to remember the nuchal measurement being done at 12 weeks amongst others. Nuchal might be worth a google anyway.

Yep, the Nuchal scan (the disability one) is done at 12 weeks, along with the due date prediction.

Standard practice is a dating scan at 12 weeks and an anomoly scan at 20 weeks. I don't know of anywhere who'd do a routine scan at term and there's certainly no advantage of doing that.

A nuchal scan is different to a dating scan (but can be done at the same time). Not all hospitals do these and it is done in conjunction with blood tests (called the quad test) and gives a risk factor of downs syndrome.

I suspect wires have been crossed and she'll have a 12 and 20 week scan.

12 and 20 weeks here too. In our case quite a few more for all ours due to bleeding, twins (high risk pregnancy) and other complications.

The Nuchal scan is primarily to detect Down's syndrome and certainly in this part of the country you only get it if you ask. Their reasoning being: why detect the problem (at cost to the NHS) if you don't intend to "do something" about it. Something is usually an amnio with a risk of miscarriage to get a genetic profile then termination if the news is bad. You can understand that a lot of people would never contemplate doing something about it so the Nuchal could be seen as a pointless waste of resources. Others might say it gives you time to adjust and prepare.

My wife is pregnant at the moment (18 weeks), she has had 2 misscarriges in the past, she had alittle bleeding at 8 weeks and had a scan, then the standard one at 12 weeks (mainly because we kicked up a fuss due to the previous problems) and is booked in for one at 21 weeks all ont the NHS.

However for peice of mind we decided to go for a private scan last week. So much better than the NHS, treated like people, very freindly and a comfortable environment, oh and tea/coffee while we waited. We had a 4D scan and the pictures are excellent even at 17 weeks. I would highly reccomend you look into a private scan, then can do the standard 20 week scan and loads of others.

We went to Brayford studios in Lincoln, it was pretty reasonably priced too.

As others have said it normally seems to be 12 weeks and 20 weeks.

With us having twins the first scan was 12 weeks and it's every 4 weeks until they arrive.
We had the 24 week scan on Monday just gone, it was a fetal scan with the consultant this time.

Cheers for the replies guys, i'm just excited / worried all at the same time as i'm going to be a dad for the first time.
The girlfriend has had 2 kids before so she know's the score.
She went to the Doctors the middle of last week, they gave her a due date (approx) of Nov 2nd.
& estimated she was 5-8 weeks.
She's however in her words, put on a lot of weight & is getting symptoms that're more common @ 12 weeks (3moonths).
She spoke to one of her friends & one of her friends seems to think this might mean she's further on than she thinks she is or her friend thought it could be twins, she said she had the same sort of symptoms and was showing early when she'd had twins.
Personally, i have absolutely no idea as i'm just a bloke, i'm going on what 2 current mothers have said!
The girlfriend made a fuss when she phoned the doc's & they've fitted her in early for a scan just to double check everythings ok & to find out what's going on, But, she's still got to wait 2 weeks.
How much is a scan privately & out of curiosity how much is a 4D scan? (Ballpark figures ofc).

Can she not work out her own dates? roughly its the time since the day of her last period minus 2 weeks (date of ovulation)this will give you babes age.

The private scan was a gender scan only and he chucked in the 4D for free due the the problems we have had (and to try to get us back for more i expect) it was half price through march so was £40 not the normal £80. Take a look on their website, they do packages and the prices are detailed.

It's good to see that you have (quite predictably) come round to the idea from your initial stance of not wanting anything to do with it.

In this area you will get a 12 week nuchal scan and 20 week anonaly scan as standard

Twins and other high risk pgs get more.

In one of my pregnancies I was scanned twice a week from 26 to 32 weeks then everyotherday until 34 weeks. You then get bored and blase!

She's worked out her dates as accurately as she can, but due to the fact she was'nt actively trying to get pregnant she does'nt really remember the exact date of her last painter & decorators day.
She went to the DR's for conrimation of the pregnancy, which was confirmed & was given the standard book up a midwife appointment etc.
She was predicted between 5-8 weeks mid last week & was given a due date (rough one of Nov 2nd).
She was just a bit conerned this might have been wrong though as she's gone "hard" & can't get her top button done up already which makes her think it's a bit further on than she thought, although her friend who's had twins says twins show earlier in pregnancy, but it also says on the net that as she's had children before that she might start showing earlier.
She says that after her first her second did'nt show early so she's just a bit confused which is understandable, the symptoms of her pregnancy & things that're happening to her all seem to tie in with she's a bit further on than the Dr thought.

I'm actually quite concerned about the amount of standard nuchal scans. Are you actually given the information before hand about what it's looking for and the implications if it's high risk?

4 kids here and yes...told very clearly what the scan is for - and wanted it.

As for 4d scans...about £60 on our last (waste of money...you get a much better picture when its outside, just wait!)

We also had a sexing scan (cant get them on the nhs in Reading as too many people kill girls..seems to be the jist) £100 - waste of money, they said girl....it wasnt, waste of time painting a room pink and choosing girls names.

Lois - yes we were given a leaflet ! They do it as standard along with the triple testin all the local hospitals in my area. (Except I missed it by a couple of weeks last time)
I was told it was hoped to spread UK wide - nuchal as standard

I had a triple test and my risk was higher than expected 1:500. (past pgs 1:6000 and 1:60000). The anomaly scan picked up 2 issues - which would have in effect have adjusted my risk from the triple test to something like 1:100 or so. One was a heart defect - this was ruled out by a trip to GOSH and a fetal echo. There was still talk of an amnio at 23 weeks - the rest doesn't bear consideration. I suppose the good thing is our local hospital provides a good counselling and explanation service - I had 2 hours with a consultant on this one. BTW the second anomaly was disproved at a later scan as well. I think if I had had the nuchal scan done then this may have given me a better idea of risks. I was told this was why they want everyone in our area to have it

Private scan for a 2D one was £55 for us. Much better than the NHS one.

I'd keep an open mind and not be too concerned with the experts' thoughts. The real experts also tend to listen to what an experienced mother has to say. We knew exactly when our second was conceived - there was only one possible occasion due to some unusual circumstances at the time! But despite us telling them this the midwives/sonographer wouldn't have it and outright told us we were wrong irked

The little one was born exactly when our dates said it should have been.

We were given the option if we wanted to have a nuchal scan or not, we decided we didn't want them done for a number of reasons and also because we would deal with the hand that we were dealt should there be any issues.

Thankfully the consultant described them both as perfect at Mondays scan, she was checking growth and blood flows through their hearts and all that jazz, she was also able to confirm that it's two girls at this scan too.
I think this was a 3D (4D?) scan, i'm not sure, it was different to the ordinary scans as the pictures we got are more like proper photos of the babies rather than the normal scan ones.

I spoke to my mum last night, let her know what's going on and asked her for some advise.
She informed me we have twins in our family so that could be a possibility lol.
I very much doubt it is twins, probably more likely she's just showing a bit earlier.
