Low impact lifestyle changes/exercises to keep fit
Discussion
Due to a serious knee injury, I cannot play football or any other phyiscal sport.
What sports/lifestyle changes can ensure I can remain fit? For example, where-ever I walk, I walk with pace but then this doesn't work in slippery conditions and can make me not see obstacles. I also use stairs more than lifts etc but what else would be useful (low impact stuff)? I am not necessarily interested in gaining muscles but trimming any fat and keeping my heart etc fit.
Thanks

I had my ACL replaced in my left knee in December 2008 and I was at a similar stage to you about 6 months ago - i.e. the knee wasn't strong enough to do strenuous, impact exercise - therefore the emphasis was on non-impact exercise at this point.
As my aim was always to get back into sport I took my rehab pretty seriously and was doing swimming (other than breast stroke), stationary bike (although no reason why you can't ride a push bike - maybe don't get up out of the saddle though) and general body weight strengthening exercises like one leg squats, one leg calf raises etc
Walking fast and climbing stairs are all well and good but you need to make sure you 'stress' your kneee through it's full range of motion to return it to pre-injury strength.

Just get training ACL re con should not prevent you doing a great deal, avoid sharp twisting and turning and open chain exercises to prevent shear forces. Think of what guys achieve with missing limbs.
Apologies you did t mention your injury, what have you done to your knee?Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
