My wife is suffering from pains in the wrist. It is an acute pain when weight bearing. She is big on the whole yoga thing so having no strength in her wrists is a bit of an issue.

Any thoughts chaps?

I guess a form of arthritis, although that's just a word for "joint pain"

If she ever gets pins and needles in her fngertips, it'll be related to carpal tunnel syndrome

Did she yank something quickly? Quit sniggering at the back. She could have popped a ligament. It will heal in time, if so, but she has to not use it for any heavy-duty lifting, putting pressure on it in yoga etc.

So, this kinda stuff is fine:

And this kinda stuff is bad:

See how much stress it puts on my wrist... er I mean the wrist. Back in a sec.

Hahaha. Thanks for the pictorial. Very informative.

No she didn't yank or pull anything - we've been together almost 10 years - and it is in both wrists, not just one.

Ok, I'm back.

When I say "yank", maybe she was trying to move a heavy table. Or did she fall while doing yoga? It could simply be that some of the yoga asanas are too difficult for her and it's a symptom of that. Not sure how you strengthen the wrists as it's all cartilage. She could try warming up pre-yoga session by making circles with the hands and keeping the forearms still (IYSWIM). Failing that, wrist support bands might be helpful although it will compromise friction on the floor. And eat glucosamine and/or fish oil capsules/tablets as these are supposedly good for joints.

Why is it that if you google "yoga poses" you get pages and pages of hotties yet if you go to any class up and down the country, it's all middle aged heffers? Talk about breach of the Trade Descriptions Act.

Yoga injuries are more common than you might think. It could well be that she's hyper-extending the joints or just overdoing it.

The joints need to be kept warm and rested. Ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling.

if you don't mind me asking, how old is your wife? the reason i ask, certain forms of arthritis are more likely to occur in certain age groups. you can pretty much rule out degenerative joint disease because it's occurred in both wrists, and about the same time so it seems. you say acute but i presume you mean sharp? how long has she been having the pain, was it a sudden onset and is it worse during a particular part of the day (e.g. morning, night...). when it first started was it both wrists, the more dominant wrist and if one before the other, how long was the time lapse in between? is there any noticeable swelling or redness. any loss of range of motion? does it hurt her if she fully extends her wrist, even when not weight bearing?

it's hard trying to diagnose musculoskeletal problems online huh hehe

if i can think of any more questions i'll ask.

thanks

, was it a sudden onset - can't remember.

and is it worse during a particular part of the day (e.g. morning, night...). The same all day.

when it first started was it both wrists, the more dominant wrist and if one before the other, how long was the time lapse in between? - marginally worse in the right wrist but started at broadly the same time

is there any noticeable swelling or redness. any loss of range of motion? Not really.

does it hurt her if she fully extends her wrist, even when not weight bearing? - a little. Not particularly. Only when weight bearing.
Thanks for your help Ross. Her answers above in bold.

She describes it as a feeling of lacking strength as well as being painful. She describes it as being 6/10 painful (and bear in mind she's had 4 kids with no pain killers perhaps tells you something about her pain threshold). I'd pack her off to the doctor but she's so bloody stubborn....

hi,

from what you have given me you can pretty safely rule out arthritis, because the fact it's in both wrists and at roughly the same time means it's highly unlikely to be a degenerative arthropathy; and the fact there is no swelling or morning stiffness and the only symptoms are the wrist then an inflammatory arthropathy is also highly unlikely. so thats good news. but, it is of course possible to be some form of degeration due to some potentially abnormal stresses it gets from repeated yoga (i have no idea what it involves, how much stress goes through the wrist, and how long and often she has been doing it!)

finally though, a person who uses a pain rating properly (you'd be amazed you get patients saying their pain is 11 or 12 out of 10!!! even if 10 is worst imaginable pain!

i'm half reluctant to say ligament or tendon damage because, the odds of it happening to both wrists at the exact same time are pretty slim, but it's possible. My personal opinion would be to bypass a GP (all they will do is give you some pills for a few weeks to see if it improves) and go and see a good chiropractor or a physio if you can afford it (i would personally go to a decent chiropractor myself) so they can do a full physical. sat here typing at a computer i can't exactly do some joint play/mobilisation stuff (there are 8 bones with even more joints in the wrist!) to your mrs hands so it's hard to really understand whats going on.

if it's been going on for 6 months that's a long long time. has it got worse over time?

sorry i can't really be much more help, but hopefully if you had any arthritis worries i may have calmed them at least smile
