Hi all. I've been on a healthy eating plan for 6 weeks now, lost 18lbs. I feel much healthier as i'm eating loads of fruit and veg and drink about 3 litres of fresh water a day, but one side-effect is chronic constipation! How can i be eating so well, but not be able to do the business! Have to resort to medication after a week because it doesn't feel so good.

Will there be light (or something!) at the end of the tunnel?

Are you doing any exercise as well?

What on earth are you eating?

To lose weight that fast I'd guess Atkins, but you wouldn't be allowed the fruit. And you certainly wouldn't be constipated...

Definitely wonder what you're eating but 3lbs a week isn't dangerous. All the roughage from fruit and veg plus the amount of water you're drinking should mean your stools are soft. Are you eating crackers or something as well?

3lbs a week isn't dangerous; I believe it is considered a pretty healthy measure. But it isn't easy to keep up, and 3L water a day is 2kg more than he needs. He is either 'going' very frequently, or eating something else that makes his body hold onto it- carbs in any form tend to do that, but in that case how has he lost 3lbs a week?

Nothing sinister in my eating plan, i joined scottish slimmers through my work, basically low fat eating. 3lbs a week weight loss is fine for a bloke i believe.

I can't do aggressive exercise as i'm recovering from cracked ribs and a chipped elbow, but i do walk about 2 hours a day with the dog.

Think i'll give the prunes a go though smile feeling well bunged up this morning!

Get some fibre into your diet, that'll help keep you regular.

If you still have problems, try Milpar.

No, not this:

This:

Can get it in any pharmacist but you may have to ask for it over the counter. It's not pleasant (tastes like parafin... that's the par in Milpar) but it lines the stool so the world will fall out of your bottom. Try mixing with milkshake or soya milk if you cannot stand the taste. Don't mix with fruit juice as it separates and will look like sperm floating in your juice.

Also try eating linseed/flax seed with your salad as when that comes into contact with fluids (namely the bile and digestive juices in your stomach), it secretes linseed oil which again coats the stool in a slimy mucus. Your friendly Holland and Barrett will sell such seeds.

However, you really need to investigate the cause of your constipation.

You can get Fibregel from the chemist which is a disguised as a lemonish tasting powdered drink that sorts this out without resorting to laxatives.
